PC versions of Mortal Kombat 1, 2, & 3
« on: June 02, 2004, 10:48:34 am »
Does anyone know where I can get the PC versions of Mortal Kombat 1, 2, and 3?  I used to have a copy of Mortal Kombat, and, even though it was not arcad perfect, it did have the right fatalities (unlike the SNES version) and ran smoothy (unlike the MAME version).
So, does anyone know where to get them or has anyone else played them or am I imagining things?

I remember a friend had MK3 - I borrowed it but only had a keyboard so I gave up with the 6 or 7 buttons or whatever...

You might have Windows compatibility issues if you do find them...

I used to have MK3 for PC.  IIRC it was a Win95 game.  Might work in XP.  MK1 was DOS I believe, and I don't remember seeing a MK2 for the PC.

Okay, I looked around and found this:

MK1 - ??? - ??? - DOS
MK2 - x386 DX 33MHz - 4MB - DOS
MK3 - x486 DX 33MHz - 8MB - DOS/Win95
Ultimate MK3 - ???- ???- Win95?
MK Trilogy - Pentium 90MHz - 8MB - Win95
MK4 - Pentium 133MHz - 32MB - Win98

It's incomplete, but it is a start.
As for where to find them...there was a listing on ebay for MK Trilogy, and  I don't know if these are in your area, but there's a place here in Dallas called Half-Price Books.  I've found Tempest 2000 for PC there.  Places like that would be a start.  Also, a lot of times these"mom and pop" computer shops will carry used software.  Hope that helps.

And for the record.  I really hated the PC version of MK4.  Very cab un-friendly controls and poor graphics.

I have MK 4 PC version on my cab and I don't think it's that bad.  Graphics aren't the greatest I'll give ya that but the controls are completely remappable.

Also, I've tried to get 1, 2 and 3 running but they seem to have a lot of problems with newer video cards... I've never got any of them to work on my cab but I wish I was able to.  I still have MK 3 on cd.  I lost my MK 1 and I don't think I've ever had a "legit" copy of 2.

Mk4 is great for the pc.  Go ahead and skip 1-3 though.  As the ultimate mk fan I for course had to have the pc versions.  Unfortunately it's not a matter of having 6 keyboard keys, because the pc ports were made back in the days when the pc joystick only supported 4 buttons.  What this means is there aren't enough buttons to play mortal kombat properly.  (They merged some of the buttons together.)

Also there are various other problems related to them being dos versions.  These games are emulated in mame, use those versions.  If your system can't handle them then get a new one or use the snes ports, which are near perfect.

What about Trilogy?

Also, I have Mortal Kombat 1 and 2 for SNES, but I cannot get the backup roms for them and my cartridges take about 50 flicks of the reset button to function.

Playstation... bah!  N64 is the best version.

The best version of mk4 is mkgold, which is on the dreamcast.

Have you tried MK1, 2 and 3 through some older versions of MAME? IIRC they used to run a lot faster - apparently a lot of speed hacks were taken out of the drivers recently.

Yeah but they were faster because of inaccurate drivers.  The timing was a little off and the sound fx were bad.  Even console ports would give a better feel than that.  Imo if you can't run it properly then don't bother.
