That's friggin awesome!  I wonder how hard it would be to clean up the images a bit so they look a little better?  ;) <- To anyone on the board with image enhancment tallent!

Holy cow!  These things are hard to put together.  Took me like 30 min to do Defender.

A word of advice to those who plan on putting one of these together: Start from the top.  I started at the botom, and it was pretty hart to get the tabs for the top to stick trying to press them in place with the tip of the scissors!

And BTW, it's ROBOTRON!

If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

If the dimensions were accurate enough, perhaps these things could be  resized to create actualy arcademachine plans for the games not already drawn up?

I don't know if all these games are accounted for, but if not... maybe these things have some purpose.

Phew!, I wasn't the only one wasting my time on those things.  I even started to create a template for Karate Champ, and after two hours of working on the template (not to mention the time spend on building Pac Man and Defender) I realized I've got enough hobbies and this is cutting into my limited time.

I wonder how long it'll take for the artwork section of this board to be over taken by papercade templates?

To avoid the droopy-cade as seen in the above pic, anyone have ideas to make these things more rigid?  How thick of paper can safely run through a printer?  Or can you use some other medium (cardboard?), and simply paste the paper (like stickers) onto it?  Ideas?

I think I'd be happy to dedicate time to do these if I knew the results would be lasting.  Slashdot had another story on paper sculpture awhile ago, with a link to a really cool motorcycle model!

I used photo paper meant for inkjets on mine, and it works great, Just be careful not to crease too sharply or the ink can flake off. I'll post photos when I have my arcade completed.

Could you cut small pieces of cardboard like from a cereal box or something-to reinforce them?  haven't printed them yet for fear of spousal ridicule :-X

OK, my twisted mind came up with this idea:

Buy one of those tabletop arcade games off ebay - take Galaxian for instance.

Convert the Pac Man paper arcade to have Galaxian art.

Print out the paper arcade so the screen of the tabletop game will fit in the opening of the paper arcade (use strong paper or cardboard backed to hold weight.

Take screen and guts out of tabletop game and make them fit in the paper arcade.

Figure out a way to make the controls poke through the paper arcade control panel and control the tabletop game (hard) - or route wires from under the paper arcade to a full size set of controls mounted in a project box (not so hard).

For even more fun, use a cell phone with color screen that runs MAME and make the worlds smallest MAME cabinet.

The things I think up while in the shower.......

Idea number two:

You know those greeting cards with sound chips in them?

Find a way to make one with your own sound files.

Flip a switch under the paper arcade cabinet of your choice, and the authentic sounds of that game can be heard eminating from the cabinet!

If anyone knows how to make one of those sound chips, I'll take one with Tempest sounds!

They aren't that hard to do.  Get one of those "talking" photo frames, it's a sound chip and recorder in one.  Take the guts out, record your sounds on it, and put it in your cab.  They run about $14 at Radio Shack, and I'm sure you can find them cheaper elsewhere.

As Far as materials to make the cabs out of, try styrene sheet (available at most hobby stores), you can't print on it, but you can use it as an under-material and glue the artwork on top of it.

Sadly the quality of the artwork on the papercade models is very poor.  I'm planning on cleaning up at least Defender, Robotron, and Tempest.

Anyone else planning on doing some cleanup?  Perhaps we can split the effort....

...I'm about 1/2 way through building my paper arcade.... :'(

it was then that I realized that I had spent about 1.5 hours on this....and sadly I didn't have much better to do with my time. Oh it was a dark day indeed in my arcade world.

BUT, on the other hand....I have more geeky ways to show off my gaming !

PS- I have a MAJOR art project to be displayed soon on this very web site....stay tooned for details!
Seriously. Will it fit in my basement or what?

FYI, I am working on the DEFENDER model, using vector artwork for the art.  I will post the final version here when I'm done.

Any takers for Robotron?

You can run card-stock (usually) through a printer. 80lb. maybe.

I plan on "dry-mounting" my regular ole' printouts to foam-core w/ rubber cement (brushing on Best-Test (tm) works the best), then assembling them a little differently. It should give the appearance of miniature 3/4" plywood. I'll post pics if it works out.

I see these people as the same "script-kiddies" that find ways to take advantage of newbie internet users.  They commonly "resell information" on ebay, tricking people into thinking they are buying the actual product, when in fact (in small print) they are only buying information on how to purchase or obtain the product.

There was one really funny thread awhile ago on someone who used ebay to resell arcade cab plans from somone on this board.  Turns out he was just selling a LINK to the original guys homepage which contained instructions!  Talk about bold!

I am almost done now, cleaning up the DEFENDER paper model, using 100% vector art.  The last thing needed is the bezel.  I did find a .crd (Corel Draw) file, but can't open it with Illustrator.  Can anyone convert this to Illustrator for me?  Anyone with Corel Draw out there?
