game select button - need to drill again?
« on: May 29, 2004, 11:25:54 am »
What front ends are available that will let you use the joystick and the P1 fire button to select the game. I've started experimenting with front ends and haven't really found anything.

Mame32 lets you use the joystick but I can't seem to figure out how to select without using the left mouse button (which I don't have on my CP)

MameFE looks like it will work if I tell it I have a hotrodSE and set the buttons up but it was kind of buggy (the blue box around the rom would disapear as you navigate).

I installed mamewah and it just didn't work. It locked up (xp reported "not responding"). I haven't messed with it since.

Any suggestions or is it just easier to put in the extra button?

mamewah lets you remap the buttons to whatever you want.  However, since that didn't work for you, why don't you give gamelauncher or dragon king a try.

Not quite what you are asking, but www.mameworld.net/emuloader will let you scroll the gameslist with the joystick and start a game with the P1 Start button, if you tell it you are using the SlikStik controller.

Don't most of them?  ArcadeOS and Gamelauncher come to mind.

I have been using Emulaxian for a year and am still in love with the thing.  Doesn't get enough talk on this board as far as I am concerened, the thing is so chock full of options you can do whatever you want - even the choosing the game using the P1 fire button (and scrolling using the joystick).

http://3darcade.mameworld.net/

It may seem overwhelming at first when you look at it, which I wonder is why more people don't use it, but right "out of the box" the thing works great without any invovled setup at all.

One last declaration of love to this front end (how bad does that sound!   :-[  ), the person who writes the front end (Peter) is awesome.  Ive sent him questions via email, at all hours of the night/day, and he always seems to answer within minutes.  I am telling you, I've sent him an email at 3am (his time) and 3:20am I have an answer.  Also, I sent him a "how about you add this to a future release" idea, and within a week he sent me the beta version of my idea to test out.

:) Rotate or die! :)
