Why am I so bad at Counter-Strike ?

I've got a problem - I'm complete crap at Counter-Strike. Just plain awful.
It seems everyone that plays CS has mastered the game except me. I enjoy playing when for the few seconds I stay alive.
So where do I go for training? Anyone here want to kick ---my bottom---?

Do you know how to strafe?  Something that always worked for me when learning a new multi-player FPS to calculate how long I would live before I was killed.  If it wasn't very long I would find any gun and just start shooting all over the place.  By the time I ran out of ammo I would statistically be dead anyway.  Weapons that bounce off of walls or have a delayed explosion are preferred for this method because killing another player by chance in a FPS is not hard to do.  Rocket Launchers are also fun, just remember to try not to blow yourself up, but if it comes down to another player shooting you at close range or you killing both of you with a rocket, kill both of you with the rocket everytime. Don't forget, other players must recollect their weapons when you kill them, so kill them at any cost.  After following this method for a while, you will become more selective with you shots and better at saving yourself, thus a better player.  

Remember, don't just take the good shot, take all the shots.

Because of the skill level of everyone CS has a steap learning curve.

1 Pick the right guns
2 Burst on long Shots
3 Look around
4 LISTEN
5 Walk and crouch to be silent
6 Keep your cross-hairs up at head level
7 Don't Camp and know where others will
8 Learn how each gun feels

Other then that just practice, I really don't know what to say.

You did pretty well, you just probably need to practice a bit to find out which guns suit you and get good with that gun.

Teamwork is important i.e. sticking to the objective, giving out important info (bomb at B, there coming from CT spawn etc...) listening/walking quiet...

There are a lot of people that just pwn (or cheat) on c-s and it's like instant awp or colt/ak death when you round the corner... and it's not fun facing those folks... but if you can get  a good mix of skill players and play the objective (defuse/plant bomb, rescue/hold hosties, etc)  it can be fun.

*shrug* There might also be some settings that help like how you "bind" different keystrokes, and "buy" scripts so you can buy quickly at spawn... help a little.  also which resolution and mouse sensitivity can have  a  factor too... but mostly it's practice/playing alot and stuff...

I played CS for a little while online and never got very good at it. I did get pretty decent at other games though. I'd say learn the maps of the game and follow around good players and see how they play. They pull the same tricks over and over.

If you want to try something new check out the classic Unreal Tournament mods StrikeForce and Infiltration, very good stuff!

I've played CS since Beta 4 and had a server for about 6 months last year. Every version after beta 6.5 has got worse and worse.

The thing that really irritates me is the total lack of teamwork. No one gives a crap if you get killed. People camp, run off on their own with the bomb and don't plant it, camp with the AWP,....not to mention the cheats. Back in beta there was a MUCH greater emphasis on team work and there were unspoken rules.

The one thing that could fix all this is a proper score system. I mean, it's a team game with a death match score system.

Don't worry if you suck at it; just wait for HL2. That game will play and look so good it'll make your eyes bleed.

Yeah, and I hear that HL2 will ship with an updated version of CounterStrike so it'll be all purdy with the new HL2 graphics engine. Still, I'm sure the core CS gameplay will remain the same, so I'd like to try and improve my skills a little before the whole world gets hooked to CS again.

I'm with you on this one JoyMonkey, the FSP is just not my game... i was pretty good at Bond for the N64. tho...
Hummmm... i wonder if i connected a N64 gamepad to the PC if i'd stand a better chance... am not really good with the whole KB and mouse... not when it really matters running for your life anyway.

Just a gamepad isn't going to cut it But a mouse/gamepad combo works really well in my opinion. Use the mouse like normal and hold the gamepad with just your left hand. Set the d-pad to forward, back, strafe left and strafe right. Program the rest of the buttons for stuff like the buy menu.

I will finally be getting a computer fast enough to play CS!!  Yeah, I am so old school. Playing mame is enough for me  I played 3 player rampart the other day with friends on the ps2.

Anyway, if I ever get high speed internet again we'll have to play.

I haven't played CS for a couple years I don't think, but I got super good at it back in the day.  I was usually getting scores like 40-3 on my good days.

Aim for the head everytime.  You'd be amazed at how many more kills you'd get.  That first bullet is the most important and if you nail a guy in the head its only going to require one more burst of bullets into his chest to put him down.

One more important word of advice that I used.  Keep your mouse sensitivity LOW.  Playing the "twitch" game with a super high sensitive mouse only makes it too difficult to get your crosshairs on something.  If your sensitivity is low, you have to move your entire arm instead of just your wrist, but you are able to get your crosshairs EXACTLY where you want them to be very easily!  This is huge.
