FINISHED MY PACMAN - CHECK IT OUT! :)
« on: May 20, 2004, 10:03:38 pm »
Wow, I finally finished my first cabinet (well me and some help from a few good friends - took a lot longer than I thought it would too and I feel so great to have gotten it done) so I figured I would post it here and see what the community thought. This was the first thing I've ever really built (except a really crappy sign once) so go easy on it. If anyone want's anyhelp on putting a pacman together for themselves (like measurements etc.) let me know, I learned a lot along the way. Basically the machine is constructed out of 3/4 mdf wood (wooden control panel instead of metal, my only deviance from the original arcade design) all the way around with a 17 inch monitor (free, people seem to just give these away) a 200 mhz pentium 1 running mame and glaunch as the front end. I also added a couple games to it like galaga and frogger just for fun. :) My girlfriend, painted the sideart (it's not quite done yet, but I think it look's good ;). The joystick is a happs hacked into a sidewinder. total cost, $215.00 roughly. Give me your thoughts and if anyone else out there has made a pacman replica i would love to see pictures!

Here's a better picture of the sideart. It's not quite done as you can see because i'm still messing some red in the mouth of the ghost and in pacman's eyes. Also there's some color missing in the first letters of Pac-man but it's getting closer. To paint it I made a transparency (like the ones they use in school) of the pac man side art and then I displayed it onto the machine with an overhead projector. Than my girlfriend painted it on (which she wasn't very happy to do because it took a whole day... good thing she loves me mwahahaha). I think it turned out pretty well and a little more original than a printed sticker. I just couldn't afford the sticker. Also, for printing I found something a lot more affordable than kinko's. Go to a college near you (usually a larger state school) and go to their art department with a disk of the images you want and have them print them for you. At my school they can print poster size images easily on laser color printer and laminate paper for much cheaper than kinkos. Find a student for a discount. To print the sideart for pacman full size on laminate paper it would have cost 40.00 a side. Also, any suggestions on how to protect my control panel graphic? Thanks!

Cool, it;s nice to see someone paint the aideart on instead of using the official repo sideart at www.twobits.com.  It's more authentic as pacman was painted on.

Self-Adhesive Clear Laminate will help protect your cpo.  Get one that is fairly thick so it will hold up to wear.  Or use some clear lexan.

Looks great!!  I really like seeing someone go through the effort to paint on the sideart, and like SirP said, it looks very authentic.  Although the later production runs of Ms. Pac had vinyl sideart, the painted ones just look better.

I recently picked up a Ms. Pac upright that someone covered the sides with green laminate.  I'm gonna remove the laminate and try to repaint the sides on mine, too, although I doubt I have the patience or talent for it...  Again, fantastic work!
