On the lighter side...
« on: May 20, 2004, 06:05:29 pm »
Some people have their quirks. I have a few; toilet paper needs to be facing out. Have to have an even number of ice cubes in my cup. I know I sound a bit dizzy. But one of my biggest annoyances is when people say acronyms especially when they sound awkward. GWOT = Gee-whot. I hate that crap. Now I have to ask, does anyone actually pronounce "BYOAC" as "beeyoak"? When you're talking to your friend and telling them about the site, do you actually say B-Y-O-A-C or do you spout out "BEEEEEYOOOOKE!" And if you do, why don't we just go all out and quit saying control panel and replace it with "CeePee" and "FissFitt" or "DubbleYouTeeBee!" HELL, LET'S GO CRAZY! START PRONOUNCING LOL! ROFLMAO! LMAO! ASL!

Sorry. My passion is often misplaced.

On the same note, do you pronounce MAME as "Maim" or "Mammy"?

Don't have any real friends.  So I always just type it.  ;D

When I do talk about it, I usually say "the boards".  If I *were* to say BYOAC, I would probably say "by-o-ac" "By-oak" or "by-wok" or even "by-ok".

I like saying some of my acronyms so for unlawful carnal knowledge off!

I also pronounce my silent Ks and Gs.  I blame Garry Gnu.

Why is this in main?

If I ever actually said it aloud, I'd say "BOY-ACK"...
Yeah, I know the  O and Y are reversed, but it sounds better phonetically that way.

BOYACK!

I always say B-Y-O-A-C though it never comes up in conversation (none of my friends are video game junkees -- and I wanted to make a four player cab -- stupid stupid me).

But I'm guilty of making up my own acronyms.  Like, "I better put this over here, J.I.C.".  When I get the strange looks I explain that J.I.C. means Just In Case.   I just like speaking in as few syllables as possible*.

*Yeah, I know JIC and Just In Case have the same number of syllables so need bothering to point that out.

I say each of the words separately.  Build Your Own Arcade Controls.  I have time, so no need for acronyms.  My work uses enough acronyms.  Heck, I'm a CISSP who works at a company that has a two-letter acronym for a name, in a division that's a four-letter acronym.

Shoot, I got that beat, I'm a CISSP in the Federal Government.  Everything, and I do mean EVERYTHING is a pronounced acronym.  DITSCAP, FISMA, FICA, NIST, OMB...  These are the acro-words that haunt my dreams.

Oh, and I pronounce it Byo-ack.  The Byo sounds like the way the game Puyo Puyo pronounces itself.

And remember, No Gnus is good gnus, with Garry Gnu.

Try working in telecom. Everything is a an acronym. In fact I have seen three letter acronyms (TLAs), where each letter represented its own 3 letter acronym.

To some extent, I don't think it matters where you work.  At every office I've ever worked at, there has always been an abundance of acronyms.  At my current job, there is an online encyclopedia of acronyms, which contains around 1000 entries but it is missing a lot of them!

Oh - I have always said B-Y-O-A-C because does not seem to be an easily pronounceable acronym.

I work in pension and when I was originally hired, I was hired for "GUST" which is an acronym for "GATT, USERA, SPJPA, and TRA '97" which are all acronyms... but we then had to add "EGTRRA" to the mix...

Yes, the government can and does beat anywhere when it comes to acronyms.  I used to think that IBM was the most acronymous place in the world (they had a utility they used to track all of the acronyms so you could go look them up if you ever got confused).  But no, it paled in comparison to what I've seen in the gov't.  The problem is they don't came up with snappy acro-words, they name things out very methodically, and then you shorten them by force.  I've heard entire 5-10 minute conversations where there were no non-acronym nouns used.

re:ps - I've never physically been to a SANS class, but I did my GSEC cert from them (which has lapsed)

Re:pps - There's actually a fair number of young CISSPs here in the DC area.  I think the reason is that if you want a job in IT security you either need a CISSP or a security clearance to do pretty much anything.

Has anybody else noticed that W is the most retarded letter in the alphabet?  I mean all letters, when you "say" them, are short 1 syllable sounds.  But not W!  It's 3!  It's the only letter that when using an acronym, the acronym takes LONGER to say than the actual word!

Compare:
World Wide Web - 3 syllables
WWW - 9 syllables

So until I get a petition going to remove it from the alphabet, I suggest everyone says "wuh" in the meantime.  It sure beats "dah-bul-u".

That's a very good point with the "w" thing. From now I'm not gonna' say "double you double you double you"... I'm gonna' say "wuuuuh" and roll my eyes back in my head and make a spastic face.

I think the best thing to do when pronouncing "W" is to say it slowly and completely. This way, people will not ask you for web addresses anymore.

Good call!
"H, T, T, P, colon, slash, slash, double-u, double-u, double-u, dot, areyousickofmetalkingyet, dot, com"

While I'm ranting about W - why is that the symbol?  If it's double-u - the why isnt is UU instead of VV?  It's not double-v!

Whoever came up with the damned letter is a moron!

When I talk about these boards at work I usually spell out B-Y-O-A-C, but it comes out more like "I'm a dork, please wait until I walk away to make fun of me."

It's funny you say that, because in French, the "W" is called "double ve" ;)

And i always wondered why it is called "double u" in english ???
Maybe someone has an historical explanation...

Most do - I say it as FACK.  Now what's the proper way to pronounce GIF (soft G or hard G)?  hehe heh
