Blasteroid question

I noticed that since about Mame 70 or so, that Blasteroid on my system acts strange. When I try to play a one player game, for some reason player two shows up and both ships end up being controlled by player 1?   Is there a bug, or is it my rom set?

Which version of Blasteroids?  I just played a few levels on one to test, but there are many versions.

Blasteroid (with heads)  in mame 82, cant seem to get the other version to run at all?
