Running Golden Tee PC in your MAME cabinet
« on: July 26, 2002, 03:07:57 pm »
I have been playing Golden Tee II on my MAME cabinet and it's fun, but I would like to play the newer versions.  Drivers for the newer versions are not available yet but I saw that there is an old WIN95 PC port of the game that is still available for about $9.99 on Ebay.

Has anybody tried putting this in their MAME cab?  Does it work with your trackball, is it playable and fun?

You bet, toots! Check out my cab's site, I got info about how mine is set up. (Well actually, I've since dismantled the cab and built a cocktail one - but I left the site up.) Link is on the left. (WWW)

If you have any questions, drop me a line.

This is fantastic!  I downloaded the free demo from downloads.com and installed it in my cab and it ROCKS.  If you guys still have the box to the expansion, please let us know the official name of it.  I found a source on the net for the original game but they dont carry the expansion disk.

You can order it straight from ITSgames.com. That's where I got mine from, or just watch Ebay for them. PRetty cheap, I think I paid $20 for the game, $20 for the expansion courses.

Not yet....still playing with the demo.  It's only been a couple of weeks so I'm not worried yet.  The 4-6 wk wait wasn't a big deal to me....did you find where you can get the extra courses? I read you can contact the company and they will sell it to you, but I was just wondering if anyone found a website anywhere....

PGA Chamionchip 2000 and Titanium (2000 with more courses) uses trackball.  But a skilled trackball, not power trackball.  You have to make a smooth even stroke in order to hit the ball straight.  It's fun.

Golden Tee PC is pretty cool, but with the absence of Backspin and the who different playing style (3 motions instead of 2 for hooks/slices) it's kind of a pain..

I'll have to try Links 2003 or PGA or something else, although golden tee is really the whole reason I bought the trackball in the first place.. (And I have a GT99 board, but... i don't want to have to jamma-fy my cabinet just to play it). :-/

I've tried writing my own mame driver for gt99, but the best I can do is get it to come up in attract mode with no trackball support :-/ go figure.. I guess I'll figure it out one day.. :)

Till then, what do you think is the best PC golf game as an alternative right now ? Tiger Woods? PGA?

Actually, the Golden Tee PC has backspin. Use the right mouse button to choose backspin. (Works on the greens only.)

Yeah, that 3 motion thing sucks. ;D

Someone in chat just said the same thing?  Where are you getting this three motion thing from??  Every way to put spin on the ball is just some sort of pull back motion, and some sort of move forward motion.  IT'S EVEN ON THE FRICKEN MOUSE PAD THAT COMES WITH THE GAME!!!

Here's a pic of the mousepad.

Poonga, I have an original copy. The manual states:

"use backspin to cause your ball to roll back as it lands on the green. Backspin is applied by right clicking the mouse to begin your swing."

the mousepad thing means that the 3 position swing thing means from where your start your mouse, consider it "1" Move to a letter, then back to where you started ("1"), then forward to another direction.

What's the full name of that golf game you recommended, I'll have to check it out if its good.

Yeah, I own the original too!  I know about the backspin.
going from letter to number is one motion, going from number back to a letter is another motion?  how is that three motions is my question as stated earlier??

I had typos, I fixed them.  It's Seirra's PGA Championship Golf 2000.
unfortunately the site that had all the cool courses is down, and it isn't on seira's site anymore.  Hmm, so I don't think you can get  a demo anymore :(  Trust me, it is fun, and one of the first golf games to use the mouse for swinging instead of the triclick method (which is still there too).

But the site sucks I just noticed.

there are sill alot of people playing it (me too) on sierra's server.

Forward to a letter position is movment "1" (to either a, b, or c), back to where you started is "2"(t position 1) then forward again is "3" (to either a,b, or c).

I like the arcade one so much better, just one back swing and then forward.

I'm gonna check out thos links you posted.

Poonga, was controls are used to control that golf game besides the mouse?

I'm just curious cause I'm working on a new machine for golf games and may add extra buttons to support it. The graphics look awesome, hows the playability?

Thanks,

Not if you use a trackball on your control panel!!!  Then it is just 2 motions:)
You only have to move the mouse "forward" for your motion 1 if you want the mouse to start in a certain place on the mouse pad, but with a trackball on a control panel you don't have that!  And since the topic is "Running Golden Tee PC in your MAME cabinet" it works very nicely on a cabinet.
You have to move your mouse in any golf game that uses a mouse.

Just a mouse and a button.  There are keyboard shortcuts, but everything is on screen.
To do the swing, you pull the mouse back in a smooth motion (not too fast) then you move the mouse forward in the same smooth motion.  you get distance on the ball depending on how smooth your stroke is and if you don;t over or under power the stroke.  You hit straight if you move the mouse straight back and straight foward.

I made some high res screenshots, they aren't uploading to my website for some reason.

I found the demo

I got mine today in the mail... I also snagged the game + expansion courses from Kazzaa.

The version that came from planet luck/unbeatabledeals is an oem "not to be sold without the accompanying hardware" CD only in a generic/promotional sleeve...

but hey it works!  Now I  rearwy rearwy need a trackball (*use voice from that guy in the last Tim Allen movie that bombed*)

Thanks for the links/pointers to other fun golfgames on the PC, btw.
