joy to key and mame problem
« on: May 07, 2004, 03:19:04 am »
hey, i'm trying to finish off a sidewinder hack and i'm having some problems getting it to work with mame.

the hack went well and tested out just fine. i installed joy to key and configured it. again all seems well, and i can navigate through my front end with no problem. once i select a game though i get nothing, it's like the joystick isn't connected. of course once i exit it's functioning again.

i'm guessing i'm just missing something minor here, but i'm not seeing it. i've gone through all the jtk docs, google searched, and checked the forums here with no help. the mame config has an option for joystick, but since i'm using jtk i shouldn't have to mess with that......right?

thanks in advance for any help.

  • Resistance is... probably a good idea.

Has to be a MAME config problem (otherwise it wouldn't work in the FE)...make sure the keys you have the stick set for (in Joytokey)are the same as the ones MAME is looking for...also make sure MAME isn't looking for a joystick...could cause conflicts.

BTW...I set up a cab with Joytokey and a pad hack with no problems...so they do work together...has to be a config problem.

Hope that helps...  ;)

could it be a problem with direct input? in the jtk readme it has a line that states:

* Known limitations
  These won't work.
    1. All key emulation for Windows application using DirectInput

i'm pretty sure the joypad uses direct input. has anyone used a sidewinder and joy to key?

here's a couple other things i've checked:

in my mame config, joystick is set at none. and there are no commands set to run before my roms(ie. -joystick). i also reinstalled all the mame files just to be safe. no improvement.

reconfigured joy to key 2 more times. works in the front end but nothing else.

i've also tested in gensfe, and after setting up the controls in the wizard i checked the config file and it seems that the joypad calls are being recorded as  inputs and not keystrokes.

i've tried z26 as well and i get left to right movement but i can't get the action(fire) button to work. again i think it's taking it's cue from the actual joypad and not joy to key.

Yep, works fine I just installed Joytokey on my desktop and tested with a sidewinder...note the newest version of Joytokey works with directinput (mostly) but only with Windows 2000+ (not 98)...I'm not sure what you're running but it might be a problem...I don't have a 98 system to test with.

yep, i'm running win 98se. i'm going to be reinstalling windows in a couple of weeks(i'll probably go with win2k or dual boot) and see how it goes.

thanks for trying the set up on your computer.
