New 33" WG D9200 monitor stops working! Help!
« on: May 01, 2004, 04:55:06 pm »
I was just starting to get my MAME machine built together - working on loading software.

The monitor is sitting on the floor.  When I first plugged it in, it gave a "no signal" screen until I got my PC running and once that was installed (using ArcadeVGA card and software) I was up and running windows XP and moving ROMs into the machine.

I turned around and the screen was blank.  It had been on screensaver mode just a few min before.  Turn it off and on again - nothing.  Remove the video cable from it - nothing.

When it turns on it makes the clicking noises like it did when syncing before, and I can see the vacuum tube (or whatever it is) on the main board coming out of the tube glowing so it does have power.  Just nothing at all on the screen.

Is this a DOA ( :'( argh!!) or is there something I can do to try and troubleshoot this?  Of course they aren't open until Monday.

Yet another defective D9200.

Arrrgh, this must be like the 20th one I have heard about on this message board alone.

These things are junk, for the love of god stay away from them. All the specs and cool features in the world don't make up for the fact that they likely as not die in a matter of months.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

I'm under the distinct impression that these monitors keep breaking down because people keep running them at 800x600 when they get them.

It seems a bit more than coincidental that it always happens when they've been running XP on it for a few days before it poops out.  Windows XP, of course, defaults to 800x600 after you install the driver set.

If it's new then it's under warranty so don't touch it. First thing Monday morning you need to call Wells-Gardner and see what they have to say.

This 9200 series is another one of Wells' mistakes and I'm putting that model on my "blacklist" of monitor models I don't work on like the k8000 and U-2000.

Just for the record I never ran the monitor at more than 640x480.  Trust me, I run my dual LCD main rig each at 1600x1200 so I was living in pain at 640x480!

Not to sound like a statistics guru, but your sampling is biased.

And while pprior may have done nothing wrong, I'm sure Wellsgardner has replaced / fixed a great many monitors they shouldn't have.  I personally know of several.

Anyways, pprior if you give wellsgardner a call on monday, they'll ship you the replacement parts you need, so don't worry overly about it.  Their customer support is friendly and helpful.

This is probably a long shot, but if the screen saver was on and then it just went blank, it may simply be that your power settings within Windows have caused it to turn off.

Try pressing a key or rebooting the computer?

That was my first thought, but I've totally unplugged my computer from the monitor and I'm not seeing anything - not even the "no signal" screen that I saw when I first plugged it in without being hooked up.

What other substitute is there?  The multisync monitors that are in the Sega japanese cabs aren't easy to get a hold of in the US.  Wells Gardner does have excellent customer support from what I hear, so it's not like people get screwed over in the end.

Seems people gripe about the 9200 but there doesn't seem to be another option for those of us who want a larger arcade style monitor.

Anyway, to update my situation the WG folks offered to send me new boards at no cost which they felt would fix the situation.  I however was leary of trying to change those out as I have almost no electronics experience so they will send me a new monitor.  The only thing I'm a bit irritated with is that I have to pay shipping to send back my old one, but all in all I guess I can live with it so long as the next one works.

I'll update further when I get it tomorrow.

Just for the record, I've had my D9200 for over a year now, with no problems at all.  Even running XP at 800x600 occasionally, but not anymore.

Hey desmatic, I noticed you have a new favorite video card for the D9200 and Advancemame.  The PNY Geforce4 ti 4600 is actually better than the Blade T64?  Looks like everything but interlaced modes.  If you say so, I'll make the jump.  The Blade T64 is absolutely awful in windows.  Not that I spend much time there.  I have the Matrox G400 as well, which is great in Windows, but not as good as the Blade T64 for Advancemame.  The Geforce4 ti 4600 seems perfect!  Let me know, because if it's really that good, I'll hunt one down.

Ya, PNY's TI 4600 really rocks.  It doesn't support interlace modes, however, you don't really need them on a D9200 setup.  I've been meaning to update my video card review, as Nvidia cards are now running beautifully.  The driver updates that Andrea made fixed the low pclock limit, so now these cards support pclocks as low as 5.  This makes nvidia's TNT32 an incredible card for arcade monitor setups in DOS, probably better than the Trident's Blade T64 or Matrox's G400.   Though for strict AdvanceMAME support in DOS, Trident's Blade T64 is remarkably predictable and reliable.

My D9200 went green after about 10 hours, but they come with a warranty after all.  $8 in shipping later, I had a new chassis, and it has worked for over a year since then.  That's more than I can say about the closet of dead monitors I have out of arcade machines.  Any used monitor is a big gamble and a lot of them are expensive or impossible to fix.  The D9200 has had an odd number of problems reported on this board, but it's still the best thing available.

Anyone want to buy a couple of dead 25" arcade monitors?  Check the for sale section, I have some for sale. :)

Just a (promised) f/u.  I got my new monitor - works fine.  Not happy about having to pay shipping back on the old one because it was basically DOA, but the new one works and they didn't hassle me about shipping me a new one.  They had offered me a new board at no cost shipping, but I wasn't comfortable doing the swap.
