Something really weird

My phone just rang and my wife answered it, someone hung up and then the modem on my computer went bezerk. I went to the computer and tried to connect on dial up and I got an error saying modem already in use. What the hell is going on? Sounds like some kind of hack but I don't know. Any advice?

Is your modem set to answer automatically?  If so, you might have a problem.

When you say it went berzerk, do you mean it started making noises like when you dial in?
