With MAME, is it possible to configure keys for directly turning gamma or volume up and down? How?

I'm not sure about this.  I was reading through /src/cheat.c and it looks like you could assign a cheat to a hotkey (probably in the cheat.dat file.).  Since gamma and volume are on the tilde menu, I don't know if you could use the cheat engine to adjust this or not.

BTW, I'm pretty sure you can adjust gamma up or down, and maybe volume through gamename.ini files, if you just wanted game x to use a different value than the default each time.

what about these .ini files?  i know that tnmt has low volume, as do some other games.  i was told that i needed to access the service menu in the game (not mame, but the actual game itself by holding down F2).  well i went into this menu but tmnt doesnt have a volume control meter or value in this menu.  so is it possible to edit a file for certain games that have low volume on them?  i mean, its not a lot of them, and this would solve my volume issue.

correct.... by default mame's sound system is at full volume (as it should be)

you use service menus for games with low volume.

You only have to do it once though.

There is 4 volume controls through mame

1) Your Speakers volume control... if you have one

2) Windows volume controls...  (normally in your toolbar)

3) Mames volume control... hit tab and set while in game

4) The game itselfs volume control.. only some have it... This is the amount of sound sent to mame.

So if ANY of these are turned low... you get no sound.

but if the game doesn't send mame any sound... then mame is silent.

If mame doesn't send any sound to windows... then windows wont send any to the speaker

if the speakers volume is turned down... then it wont actually play..

okay, well most of my games are fine volume wise.  however, certain games are really low and i have to turn them up.  so this volume problem doesnt involve windows....but the game itself.  for instance, ninja turtles and wrestlefest (wrestlefest is really low).  i just want the default set higher so that the volume is higher.  ive checked in mame32 and that doesnt work.  ive hit tab for "this game only" and didnt see anything.  i dont want to change the volume for all games, because a lot of the games sound fine....is not possible to change the volume on just a few games without turning up the volume on the speakers???

You aren't listening.... it's in the service menu of the game.... press f2 while in mame.  It's the game's menu, and has nothing to do with mame.

For the record, tmnt doesn't have a service menu and outputs sound at fulll volume, so you must be mistaken on that one.  Perhaps tmnt2?

no i understood about the games service menu, thats what i was trying to access, though tmnt didnt have a service menu.  however wrestlefest is one of the main games i would like to change the volume on and i couldnt access a service menu there either.  so my question was....is there a way to change the volume without using the service menu because there didnt seem to be one for wrestlefest???

well here goes again.  there HAS to be some way to change volume values for one game.  is there not a way to customize each game to start with a different volume value???
