Your question is a little vague
If you are asking if an unmodded X-box will play a dvd-r/rw or dvd+r/rw dvd movie then the answer is YES.
If you are trying to play a backup game on dvd-r/rw then the answer is NO.

I should have said it's for video dvd's. Reason for asking is my home dvd player won't play any recordable media. It was bought before most home players were able to play homemade disks.

I've played DVDR videos on my (unmodded) xbox, although it does tend to get a bit glitchy if I encode them at too high a bit rate. Other than that it works fine. Haven't tried RW.

Which to my delight is false every dvd-r plays great on my home dvd player.

Just heads up, it depends on what type of DVD drive that your X-box has.  Some will and some won't.

but i have trouble with dvd+r
a friend of mine gave me a dvd+r movie and no problem
but myself i cant make it work altough i have the same brand of dvd disks (memorex dvd+r)
i just burned a dvd that my old and cheap dvd player can play but xbox not.also divx on dvd+r does not work
i dont know anymore
i would be gratefull for some advice

That is a bit odd, but it may still be a media problem.  memorex does NOT make the dvds that you bought.  They buy the dies from other companies.  I recently saw that Memorex changed their dies from Ritek to CMC, at least in my experiences.  Run a CD diagnostic tool like the one that comes with nero to find out what types of DVDs you really have.  Ritek dies are great with my xbox, but sometimes they dont like the CMC ones.

From what I've read the Samsung drives were great with reading cdr media but don't handle dvdr very well.  Don't remember the specifics though.   Check www.xbox-scene.com forums

I did what u suggested and it seems that the disk of my friend and mine are the same CMC(MAG F01)the memorex ones.
so maybe its me ? How do you write your DVD,Divx,.. on DVD+R
for the XBOX?

I personallly use nothing but ritek discs, and almost always dvd-r, although I have used dvd+r in the past.

I use Nero to burn my discs at 2x.  If you want specific settings or anything, or have any other questions about burning discs for xbox, let me know.

open up the disc tray. Each model looks distinct, just match the one you have.  As you can see, the Samsung is very distinctive with extra holes.  Look at the center hole design to differentiate the Philips and Thompson.

And in case you didn't know, over all, the Samsung is the best, Philips is second best, Thompson is worst.

To my knowledge, they don't serve any particular purpose at all.  I suppose they make the tray slightly lighter, but as far as I can tell, that is not the reason they are there.  I don't have any other Samsung drives (other than the xbox one) around, so perhaps it is just the tray design that Samsung has been using for a while.  A lot of companies have a distinguishing tray design to differentiate themselves.

I have the samsung drive in my x-box and i some videos of Trigun (anime show) that i burned on a dvd+r and when i put it in my x-box it says it cannot read it . Can any1 help me with ? is there  anything i have to do ? wat kind of dvds does an x-box play?( i burned the videos with Roxio easy cd & dvd creator) is there any special programs i have to use ? PLEASE HELP!!!!

I'll give everyone an idea on what the drives can read, but this is not set in stone at all.

Samsung - Usually will read CDR, CDRW, DVD-R, DVD+R.  I'd guess that applies to DVD+/- RW as well, but I have never had the need to use RW discs.

Philips - Will read some CDRW, DVD+R, and DVD-R.  No CDR.

Thompson - Will rarely read CDR or CDRW, will read some DVD-R and DVD+R.

With that said, I have talked to people who have Thompsons that will read everything and Sammys that have trouble with a lot of media, so it's almost luck of the draw sometimes.  My sammy reads all types of media I have tried (everything but RW dvds)

There are tutorials on the net that you can use to alter the pots in a Philips drive to allow them to read more media, or "better."  I've never done it though.  I believe there may also be a way to do this to the Thompson and/or Samsung drives.  Again, I've never done it as my drive works fine.

Media make a HUGE MASSSSSSIVE difference in compatibility.  Let me repeat that: MEDIA MEDIA MEDIA.  Generic CDs and DVDs will rarely work on most drives, but again, some drives can just read anything.  The importance here is the dyes that are used for the cds and dvds, not the names of the media.  Taiyo Yudens and Riteks make excellent media IMHO.  You can buy Ritek/RiData DVDs direct from newegg.com.  Otherwise, it's luck of the draw on buying in stores since names like maxell or memorex buy media from different dyes at different times.  Verbatim uses good dyes in their CD and DVD media, so they are a good name to look for.

As for Roxio, ditch it. Get rid of it now.  If you're serious about burning, get a better program. I use multiple programs depending on the situation, but use either Nero, Alcohol 120%, or RecordNow.  Out of the three, I'd recommend Nero as the best all around program to use.

I answered all of that in my last post.  I have a samsung, and use Verbatim CDrs, and Ritek/RiData DVD-R's 95% of the time.  My Samsung reads everything I've ever thrown at it pretty much.  It's read CDR, CDRW, DVD-R, DVD+R, all of varying companies.  I've had Memorex, Maxell, Verbatim, and LiteOn CD media in it, and Memorex, Ritek/RiData, and generic DVD media in it with no problems.

Go to NewEgg.com and search for Ritek or RiData.  Those are the best DVD-R's you can buy IMHO.  I use them for all my computer backups, dvd-video, backups of my DVD movies for my dorm room... they are great.  I've had them work great in my PS2, Xbox, computer, and 2 or 3 dedicated dvd players including a 5 or 6 year old Sony in my living room.

There's nothing to really be confused about.  You just need to experiment.  If you have a Samsung, you're 90% gonna have no troubles at all, Philips a bit less, and Thompsons even more so.  Then start testing media.  Assuming your xbox is modded, burn a CDR with an emulator on it, see if it reads... then try CDRW, DVD, etc.  If a Philips or Thompson doesn't read 2 or 3 different types of CD media, you can pretty much bet that it will never read CD media without modification.

Hope that clears things up a bit, if not let us know what's still confusing, I'm sure someone here can help you out.

Modded means your system has a modchip in it.  I said that because, unless you are using emulators, homebrew stuff, etc, there isn't much need to use CD media in an xbox... its all DVD.

What exactly are you trying to do with your xbox that you need to know what drive you have/what media it can use?  That may help us help you.

i downloaded a full episode anime off the internet called trigun and i burned it on the dvd+r cd and when i put it on my xbox it says this message

but when i put it on a regular dvd player it plays it just fine !  my xbox wont read the dvd+r cd of trigun but a dvd player can ! wat is wrong ? my xbox ? my cd ? which a fujifilm
