K7400/ArcadeVGA. Do you use a Video Amp? (Was: K7400 help)
« on: April 18, 2004, 06:41:53 pm »
OK, I finally got my new WG K7400 wired to my ArcadeVGA.  Looking at the docs for the k7400, I see that it accepts 1-5V video signals, so I think i am OK without a video amp.

Nonetheless the text at the DOS prompt is dim and fuzzy.  I can barely see it in the daylight with the brightness cranked up full.

Any Ideas?  a few searches here have turned up nothing really similar.

Thanks
Dave

Uh Oh, did I ask a stupid newbie question?  I am surprised no one has anything.

I read the FAQ and did a search, and really only came up with the voltage as a potential problem, but the Monitor's manual stated 1 volt was OK.

Can it hurt to try and turn up the 'Screen" control?

You need an signal amplifier. The ArcadeVGA generates 0.7V signals. That why the picture you get is faint. You are running the monitor with signals outside it specifications. Turning up the brightness will not be okay in the long run. Get the amp and it'll be fine.

The ArcadeVGA generates 0.7V signals.

That would explain it , but Andy's site claims it puts out 1 Volt.  Anyone else aware of which it is?  Andy, are you out there?

Andy from Ulitmarc told me in email that .7 is close enough to 1 volt and should work. Then he suggested the screen control I mentioned above.

So I would like to solicit some input here...

Does anyone have a K7400 series working properly with an ArcadeVGA without using a video amp?  If yes, did you turn up the screen control to compensate for dimness?

OK, so I just slightly turned up the screen control and it looks perfect.

Is there any ongoing risk here?

I liked mine better with the amp.
(I just used a db15hd gender changer and ran the standard arcade wires down to the computer.)

The color seems to look a little better.
