mame sound issues

I'm having sound issues with a number of games like paperboy, smash tv, and total carnage.   Rampart, berserk, and pacman work fine.  I've played with all the settings and nothing helps. any suggestions.     I 'm running a prettly slow machine, PIII 550,   396 mgbites ram.  thanks
