Something scary happened to me yesterday
« on: April 07, 2004, 09:54:51 am »
I've been having some very mild headaches lately.  Nothing serious, not even worth taking something for.  More of a buzz than a headache.

Yesterday the family and I were eating @ KFC.  My wife excused herself for a moment.  So I was sitting talking to our eldest son.  Suddenly, I just blacked out.  I could feel the room just sort of get sucked into the whirlpool that was my head, and everything went dark.  And as quickly as it happened, it passed.  Momentary diziness, and I was okay.

I'm lucky I wasn't driving when it happened.  That could have been bad.

Makes me think about what might happen to regs on chat boards.  "So-and-so posted here all the time, and then one day, we never saw him again."

Makes me think very seriously about my mortality.  I'm 30 years old.  I don't have a will.  I'll be drawing one up shortly, which is something I should have done years ago.

And yes, to answer the obvious, I'm going to see a doctor about this.

So, if I ever just drop off the radar...you know why.

Whoa, glad you're seeing a doctor.

On the bright side, there are potentially a zillion things that aren't deadly that could cause that.  No point in focusing on the negative possibilities until you know more.

Please keep us posted, and don't drive until you get that checked!

I'm going to see my wife's doctor.  My doctor is...well...

It very could be a lack of sleep.  Last week my wife was in PA on business, so I was up to the wee hours working on stuff.  I probably had ~32 hours of sleep for last week total.

About 10 years ago, I had a similar condition.  I would experience a dizzy spell for 3 or so hours and/or block out momentarily.  Sometimes I would just black out briefly with no warning.  The worst part about it was that it took the doctors about 9 months to get me properly diagnosed.  In the end, they determined I had something called neurocardio syncope, which is essentially a heart/brain communication issue.  My brain would think I was losing blood pressure rapidly, and, thinking I had suffered a massive trauma of some sort, would tell my heart to nearly shut down, in order to conserve blood.  Problem is, I was fine, and my heart slowing caused my blood pressure to drop, which prevented enough blood from getting to my brain, and I would black out.

The good news was that it was treatable with 18 months of heart medication, and I've only had a few dizzy spells since then.

Hopefully your doctor will be able to figure out what happened, and all will be well.

Bet it's lack of sleep when I don't get at least 6 hrs of sleep. I get what I call a wave of dizziness sometimes it feels like a giant wave washed over me and I loose balance. With a newborn on the way in less than 5 weeks looks like me and the dizziness demons are going to get to know each other a lot better.

if you have any arcade stuff you're looking to put in your will I can send you any of my personal information you may need to put me in there.

Seriously though, get yourself fixed.  Just this post alone freaked me out...I don't need to see one from your wife.  ;)

Good luck!

I lived with a girl in university who had that happen--turns out it was low iron in her blood--just took some supplements and all was well--hope yours is that easy!

And get a stool for your cab--reduces stress, increases game time and if you black out you will likely just end up with a joystick up your nose--which should wake you up promptly ;D

i had that exact thing happen to me about 6 years ago. i was at work running a scrapper( which is the huge 4 wheeled machines you see carrying dirt around on jobsites or the dump). it felt like my machine fell in a hole just long enough for my head to drop then i came back up and was dizzy for about 30mins after. it scarred the hell out of me. i thought it was heat stoke or something because it was about 110 degres that day. it never happened again.

That happened to my Mom once while she was driving on the freeway. Somehow she managed to slow down and stop on the side of the road but she said her vision went completely black. She was 25 at the time and had a bunch of other minor health problems. In your case Peale, maybe it was just the guilt of all those poor KFC chickens that got whacked. ;)

You were abducted by aliens and examined, it happens when they don't put you quite back in to the time you were in. It happens all the time but usually they put you exactly back to where you were so no one notices. When they stuff it up by a few seconds then you get weird black outs and memory blanks.  ;)

That used to happen to me all the time. from childhood up until about age 19, then it happened a couple of times worse than normal. and then never happened again. I think it has been 7 years since my last blackout.

Ive had the same problem kind of...Im 29 now.

I would get dizzy my heart would start beating really fast.  I would get real bad headaches.  well after about 4 years of this with the doctors running every test poss. it was determined that I had an EPS(electrical Pulse Study) problem.  your heart is split into 4 sections with the middle of the heart sending out Electrical pulses to each side telling it when to beat.  I had some holes(not big but the electricty from my lower right side of the heart and the upper right side kept circulating the Electrical pulses and it was causing all these problems.

I had heart surgery Dec. of 2002, not a major surgery they didnt cut me open or anything they went through my arteries in my thighs up to my heart and used a laser to close the holes.  They got all of them but 1 and Ive had one episode since and thats pretty good seeing how I would have 3-4 a week.

bottom line is it could be anything. stress is my guess though.  No sleep, kids, work and so on.  I wouldnt sweat it to much.  Get it checked out and get some rest.

Good luck.. ;)

after reading what I wrote I didnt want to scary ya.  My procedure took 45 mins,  I stayed at the hospital 6 hours. and was back to work in 10 days.  So it was a very minor deal. but a well worth deal.

This has happened to my girlfriends 50 year old father twice - both times while he was driving.  First time he drove off into a field and ended up being unconsious there for 20 min or so.  Didn't cause any damage or anything, but could have been much worse.  He shrugged it off, saying he was in perfect health, and then a week or 2 later he does the same thing with his wife in the car.  Only this time they are driving on a long bridge, he blacks out and pulls to the right and scrapes the railing.  He comes to, angry at the wife because she is screaming at him.  He says he never blacked out.  Says there is nothing wrong with him.  This happens a few more times at home - no big deal.  Everytime its brought up he becomes furious and denies the whole thing.

So finally my girlfriend forces him to go to a doctor.  Doctor says he has confilicting prescriptions.  His drivers license gets suspended for 3 months.  Except he was so stubborn that he kept driving no matter what.  He doesn't believe the doctor - he is in perfect health (even though he has more than one perscription!).  This was about 6 months ago, and I think he is doing fine now.

Go get a check up dood.

No, no...it's not that. I'm more than willing to see the doctor.  It's just that this will disrupt a lot of things.  My wife will have to take time off from work to watch the kids, and she's already in dutch for taking off time.

My father said he would watch the kids, but he lives 80 miles away.

Damn...I wish I knew a local baby sitter.

I'm going to the Dr. and this week, just working out the details, is all.

I saw the doctor today (she squeezed me in early).

After checking me out, and talking with me a bit, she's mystified as to what could have caused this.

She had some blood work done, and we'll have to wait for the results of it (whatever it is).

Peale, you did the smart thing by going to the doctor.  If this keeps happening and they can't find out what it is I urge you to keep pressing the issue, go to other doctors, whatever it takes.  i put up with misdiagnosing and "I don't know statements" for 8 months until they finally found out I had cancer.  Don't worry totally unrelated to what you're experiencing.  I'm just saying that don't just "learn to deal with it".  I was trying to but thank god everyone kept pushing me to go to the doctor.  Good luck.  Hope it turns out to be something minor.

Peale,
Fellow  New Englander how is it going ?Did you hear anything yet

jam92102 ,

Wow and I thought I was the only one around here with cancer issues, I wasn't really misdiagnosed but when I went to the dr. for sudden weigt loss he said it was probably nothing and to come back in 2-3 weeks to do some follow up blood work. Well I was working for a small company and no work meant no pay ,so I never went back, 6 months later I found out I had non-hodgkins lymphoma. I've now had 2 transplants and am having other issues with rejection.
I hope you are doinging better than me.

The doctor didn't seem worried.  Frankly, I'm not too worried either.  It was pretty much an isolated incident.  It lasted just a couple seconds.  If it happens again, however...

Peale,

I have been keeping up with this post from the start.  I'm glad to hear that your doctor is not worried although recently my doctor was not to worried about the frequent chest pains that I was having (I'm 32 and in pretty good shape).  I ended up getting a second opinion by a doctor who cared more about my health than how much money to charge my provider.  After many doctor visits through the months of March and April the problem was found and treated.
I know it's a real pain in the butt to find someone to help out with the kids and to also take the needed time off of work (I'm in a simmilar boat). But you may want to seek a second opinion just for peice of mind.  Mrs. GameCab laid on the non-stop guilt about Mini-Cab (My Son) potentially growing up without a father if I did not seek a second opinion.  As of the past 2 weeks I feel much better and the pains are gone.  (i'm not sure if that solution was due to her current lack of nagging or not ;D, but that is besides the point)
The Flight Yoke Release date is September 10, 2005.

I'm feeling fine now.  I'm sure it was a combination of lack of sleep, lead ingestion as well as some other nasty chemicals I was subject to over a short period of time.

Well...yeah.  Lead paint dust and paint stripper (both absorbed thru the skin and fumes inhaled)
