Review the artwork for my "Bang the Machine" cab
« on: April 03, 2004, 07:35:11 pm »
Hello Everybody,

I just finished the first set of artwork for my upcoming cab. What do you think? Will this work? What should I improve?

I'm still not really satisfied with the controller color scheme. Though it fits the allover color setup it appears to be a little boring. But maybe that's just me... Also, should I go with a white trackball? Those blue glowing trackballs are pretty cool. ;)

Thanks,

    Michael

I think the color scheme is pretty good, however, there would be no harm in trying out different schemes.  I really like the Marquee design and would leave that as is.  I think that the side art has a lot of empty space that could be filled with a character or something other design.

Overall it looks great.

1. Don't be afraid of "white" space (yellow in this case)

2.  I think this is a great color scheme... someone mentioned the other day that there aren't many non-blue, cool-color machines. This is a pretty good example of one that isn't blue.

3. I think you COULD add characters, but I don't really see why it's necessary.

4. The controller is fine. Your cab is simple & not over the top. Again, don't be afraid of simplicity. I don't think it wins awards for a WOW factor, but it looks good. If I were you however, I would remove most of the admin buttons. I have mentioned before the uneccesary nature of admin buttons if your ipac setup is done right. Adding extra buttons arbitrarily for admin functions is more confusing rather than less, it's not attractive, and it's lazy... I have many reasons I can site, but only if someone is really interested.

All in all, good job. Where are you going to have the art done?

Thank you all for the replies. The simplicity of my design is the result of my lacking Illustrator skills. ;) It's reassuring to read your comments.

Well, to be honest I didn't put much effort in the control panel layout yet. It's the classic Slikstik design. My favorite games are the old classics so I could probably live with a very simple CP layout. I intend to explore the depths of the mame archives though and want to be prepared for all the gems I might encounter. Before I found this board it was a total mystery to me what people like about Tempest... I always thought the classic Slikstik is a good compromise.

Since I'm from Berlin, Germany I'm going to print the artwork at a local print shop. It's going to be a digital print which will be laminated with a protective cover. It's about 150$.

As a sidenote I forgot to mention that I stole the Mame writing from Nannuu's Defender style marquee in this thread. I totally dig the fake Williams writing.

I like it simple and smart.    But lose some of the buttons on the cpanel..
