G07 and little red dot on screen
« on: April 02, 2004, 01:03:18 am »
OK, back to the pros again.  I hav a g07 chassis I replaced the flyback and HOT several months ago. (it was blowing f901) Fired it up and got nothing. F901 is ok.  Checked out Randy Fromms troubleshooting chart, ended up removing x701 (xray protection transistor) and monitor displays a single vertical?? line (it is a vertical monitor).  Did a cap kit on it and same thing.  Could the HOT still be bad or what am I looking for here? dont know if its horizontal deflection or vertical deflection problem

A vertical line on a vertical montior would be a horizontal problem ??? ???

Here's where a high voltage probe would be needed. Since you had to unsolder X701 to get a picture you need to see if the high voltage is too high (more than 24,000 volts). If it is too high the voltage regulator transistor on the far left of the chassis is probably bad.

As to the line problem you have a vertical deflection failure. A lot of the time one or both of those heat sink mounted vertical output transistors in the middle of the board have a broken leg. I always replace both of those transistors anyway if I have a vertical problem as these guys are frequent failures and they don't cost much.

Thanks again Ken, your advice has been invaluable.  I now know what to look at.  I don't have a high voltage probe but when I touched the HOT with my multimeter, the meter jumped off the scale set at 600VDC.    When I touched the ceramic resistor by X01, the voltage was back to 128 volts.  I'll look into replacing the 2 transistors on the board.  Just out of curiosity,  I have the deflection wires from the tube connected to Q1& Q4 on the horizontal deflection circuit and  Vertical on Q3 & Q5.  I've been using the tube on an 8 liners chassis and broke apart the connecter to use on it.  So I wasnt sure how the old connector went on the G07 chassis

Never try to read the voltage on the horizontal output transistor. Voltages typically exceed 1,000 volts there! You'll damage your meter.

Sounds like you have the yoke connected to the correct terminals. Randy Fromm's website (on the super secret tech page) has a troubleshooting flowchart for your monitor.
