From start to finish
« on: March 30, 2004, 03:45:04 am »
Hi there .. Newbie alert for those that need to look away!

I have a fairly new Jamma cab on the way with a 29" arcade monitor. I've been looking into what I'll need to mame it up, and have decided to go the ArcadeVGA / J-PAC route to hook it up to my PC.

I am hoping to chart my progress from start to finish, and will post here when I come up against any problems. I'll keep a word file ongoing, so once it's up and running, anyone thats starting out with a similar system will have something to help.

I think my first question is: What is the best (and as a total beginner, possibly that means the simplest) combination of Operating system / Mame / Front End to use?

The second question is: Which graphics card? On Easy MAMEcab (http://easymamecab.mameworld.net/html/advadv.htm) It suggests Windows 98 With A Trident Blade T64 .. just wondering if this is a good combination?

Thanks :)

We were all newbies at some point... ;)

For me the best choice is to go Windows 98 + mame (win32 commandline) + Mamewah!

But the simplest would be win98 + Mame32 (GUI version). This would be the easyest to configure but not the fastest solution nor the more reliable

That's a very good idea ... share your experiences...

Just to clear some things here... ArcadeVGA IS a graphic card !!! so forget the Trident Blade 64 :) It's one or the other...

"For me the best choice is to go Windows 98 + mame (win32 commandline) + Mamewah!"

Could you give me a brief explo ..

What is Mame (win32 commadline), how does it differ from Mame32?

I'll search Mamewah now :)

Thanks again!

Tony

Mame32 has it's own GUI with it, it's the best for newbies, but once you learn a little bit and want a quality front end then you need to move on from it...
