Or maybe its because you can buy a Dreamcast for $15....and it plays all those games everyone wants to see emulated in Mame (but will take another 5 years)?  

Its also my opinion that the DC has more "arcade" type games than the PS2, Xbox, and GameCube.  Plus the DC is much easier to hack (controller wise, and output display wise).  Its still the only console to output native VGA!  Did I mention its only $15!?

And for some of us, we were too busy messing with PSX, PS2, gamebox, Xbox, or whatever to notice how awesome the dreamcast really was. It took these deep discounts for me to perk my head up and notice it (I love to bottom-fish for gaming stuff anyway). That, and the VGA output is a really big deal when it comes to cabinets.

I just discovered Bleemcast which says to me that I can now run Playstation Tekken 3 and Gran Tourismo 2 with Dreamcast-ish graphics in VGA on my cabinet. My head is spinning!  

I have found several of the emulators (MAME included) to be unimpressive and/or unstable on the DC. The front-ends are typically pretty bad too. I think I'll be sticking with MAME on AMD/Windoze.

For those now building a DC library: check out half.com in their discount section. There are several excellent titles, many new, for well under $5 that ship media-mail for $2.49 and under. I just bought Sega Bass Fishing, Rainbow 6, and Phantasy Star Online for $13 shipped. Avoid the eBay inflated shipping thing. Of course none of those titles are suitable for a cabinet,  but my cabinet is also connected to a TV and I have native contollers too...

Time to hack a Sega Fishing Rod into the cab?!

I think we all are.  What I would love to see (and it will never happen) is for the companies to open up the patents and such on their unsupported consoles, so that any company could manufacture the obsolete consoles.  Picture it, being able to buy a device that could take cartridges from NES, SNES, Genesis, 2600, etc. and play them all, allowing you to only have one system for all of your obsolete systems.  Heck, it'd be nothing to put an Atari 2600 as an extra feature on your DVD player.  It would certainly extend the lives of the game manufacturers a bit, since the old console would keep appearing on device after device.  Your cable company could include a NES/SNES in your cable box.  

And best of all...  Dreamcast would still be alive and with us here outside of Japan.

I dunno. Demand would be REALLY low. Would it be worth it? And the way emulation is sweeping the scene, demand for hardware is going going gone.

But at the same time, I'm a little pissed off with situations like PSO-2  released in Sept 2001 and the online servers disappear by Sept 2003. That means that games have a two-year lifespan regardless of the existance of an enclave of hanger-ons and late-comers like us. I agree with your notion that others should have a chance to carry on by licensing or whatever. It just seems wrong that these games should die when there's still demand (even though it's small). The world is left to struggle through the reverse engineering process while the original technology gathers dust and benefits no one.

Anyway, it does seem that DC is dying ahead of its time. It's not lame yet.

It's really a chicken and egg argument.  Is emulation sweeping the scene on its own merits or because of the lack of hardware?

For me, it's lack of hardware.  I sold my SNES because I didn't have the space to keep it plugged in all the time, but if it was part of another device (built in to my TV, DVD, etc.) I'd have kept the games.  As it was, I sold both the hardware and games, and now if I want to play those same games, I'm left with an emulator, which to give the same eperience, requires a larger investment on hardware (computer with TV-out card, hacked controllers, etc.)  

My original point really was this.  If another company was producing Dreamcasts today, companies would still be making games for it.  Maybe not the latest and greatest games, but still...

Agreed. But then, you wouldn't be selling it to go spend your money on the next generation. Nintendo doesn't want you playing your SNES. They want you buying Gamecubes. Seems that it's better for the console makers to let the old systems die in order to generate demand for the new systems. This emulation scene has really filled a gaping hole left behind in the wake of that cycle. And it's a wonderful thing.

Oh well. For now anyway, I'm not starved for DC titles despite the fact that the catalog was not exactly massive in the first place.

IIRC, Sega (Now merged with Sammy, who brought us Guilty Gear), is back focusing on arcade machines again, and pachinko.  

They're also making nintendo games, ie gamecube and gameboy advance.  PSO and Sonic titles come to my immediate attention.

Well I was playing the pc version on open servers a few months back.  I remember reading that the dc version also had servers.  If you go to http://www.psocheats.net/PSOC%20SITE/ and look around in the forums you should be able to find out how to set it up.

Your "backups" may not have been autoboot enabled, so you would need a boot disc like the Utopia one, or any of the game cheating discs like ActionReplay (will allow you to boot games from other regions).  Load the boot disc, then after it starts, you swap out that disc with your backup.

The Dreamcast mod chip will not autoboot backup games for you.  The chip will let you run original import games in any dreamcast by ldetecting/oading the proper region bios before the game starts (allowing the original game to boot without a boot disc).
