play rm files from command line ???
« on: March 23, 2004, 03:04:44 pm »
Is there any player out there which can play
rm files (real media) through a command line?
And if possible shuts down with escape :)

Real Media is a proprietary format so unfortunately there are not a wide variety of viewers available. I use Real Alternative.  It allows you to play "real files" without the horrible bloat of the real installations.  I am not sure if it takes commandline parameters.  You could probably use a wrapper to make it exit w/ escape.

Get it here:

Your real solution (pun intended) is to convert those crappy rm files into a better format.  EO video is a good program for the task and it's relatively inexpensive.  I think you can even use it free for thirty days.  Then you simply use mplayer2 with the proper command-line switches.  (mplayer2 is wmp 5.4 that is still included with recent versions of wmp)

I did a study on video compression for college at one point..... The only, and I mean the only good use for realmedia is for a streaming media server.  At this point the wma/wmv/asfv3/mpeg4 format (all are basically the same mpeg4 compression method) even does a better job at this, so I guess there is literally NO reason to have media in real format anymore.

Howard, please tell the rest of the internet.  I hate real media. I haven't perfomrmed the extensive comparison as you have, but I am not impressed with the output.

Down with real player!

Is EO video just a REAL media file convertor program?  Do you have a link?  Thanks.

what's the best method to convert them?

Also, I have some encrypted real media file (that's what happens when you let the wife do the ripping ;) ). I can play them in realplayer because that's where they were encrypted in the first place,  but I have about 8 CDs worth that I don't have the originals for anymore due to a car break-in  >:( so I was never able to re-rip them.

I assume I coud "loopback" my line out into my line in but I was wondering if there was a better solution

Like howard said, eo video is a player and converter.
The player is free, the converter has a trial period of 30 days.
It works good.
I also found a free util called tinra (just googled it up).
Haven't really tried it yet though.
Howard (or other people ofcourse), since rm is such a great quality (lol),
i was just wondering if converting them would reduce the quality more....

found my solution ....
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm
It installs windows media player classic, along with the realplayer codecs :)
Since it's media player classic, it comes with command line switches and the keys
can be customized => esc can be escape from the player, nice.

Argh why didn't i read talkingoctopus' post better lol, the answer was in the first reply.

I finally got around to getting the EO player and it turns out it doesn't appear to be able to play .rmx Real Player files (they're the ones that are encrypted). Any other idea?

You just answered your own question... they are encrypted and therfore can't be converted.  They are about as useless as copyrighted wmv files at this point.  :)

I do have the key file and can play them in Real Player.
Since EO "hooks" into the actual Real engine, I was hoping that it knew how to play and convert those files  >:(
I guess my next solution is to feedback my sound out back into the sound in on my soundcard, unless someone knows of a way to "loopback" digitally.
