[OFF-TOPIC] Good ears, help me please !
« on: March 22, 2004, 01:29:26 pm »
I'm really sorry for this big off-topic post, but I need help from people who's english is their mother tongue.

I just receive my arcadeVGA today, and I can't use it because the motherboard I wished to use for it just stopped working yesterday. I just removed the DDRAM memory, I used it on another computer then put it back to the motherboard and since that moment the silly Asus POST reporter shout something I don't understand with a voice of a woman that probably ate ducks and all this outputed on the PC speaker at less than 8Khz, and I would really apreciate if one of you could hear to this file and tell me what he ear !

I know it is not monitor/video related but as I met friendly dudes in this forum and as you probably are the only ones who can understand how i can be frustrated to have this arcadeVGA and can't try it ...

I'm not good at english so I'm not sure to understand what the voice says, but I first tought the message was "System battery no charged",  so I tested the cmos battery and even replaced with other ones without success. I also tried to CLR_CLEAR the cmos memory. I tried to take the memory back to another computer, it is working good. The HD are spinning up, the video doesn't output anything, the cpu fan is ok, I don't understand what it could be.

Please, help me !

I haven't the foggiest idea what they are saying in the recording, but I suggest you take everything out of the PC that isn't essential (just remember where it went), and then swap out each component until you get a working setup.  It's the only real way I know of for nailing down a tricky hardware problem.

And to answer a previous question, I use Windows 98SE in dos mode for my cab.

Wow, that is hard to understand.  I grabbed a copy of an ASUS manual from the web, and based on the Vocal POST messages, I would say that the closest one that I found was:

System Failed Memory Test.

It definitely starts with "System Failed" and ends in "Test".  The only possible error messages like this (listed in this manual) are:

"CPU", "Memory", and "VGA".

Personally, it sounds more like "System Failed Load Test", but I don't know if that's a valid vocal POST for your particular MB.

I wouldn't worry about the cpu.  Unless you're up to freaky overclocking, they almost never fail.  Neither does memory, however, you may have a memory type that is setup incorrectly or incompatible.  For example, on some asus motherboards with the nforce chipset, corsiar memory wont work.  No boot, nothing.  Also, some motherboards are a little overly aggressive with their timings.  They pick 2 instead of 2.5 or 3.  You could also try jumpering a lower bus speed, say 100mHz.

If you know your system specks, feel free to post them.  Particuarly the mobo chipset, ie intel, via, nvidia, sis.

Thanks for your response dudes, I finally eared the message in slow motion many times and I also agree that the closest message should be "System failed memory test" even if it is from miles to what I eared first ! ;-)

Anyway, I googled on the keywords a7v333 "system failed memory test"
http://www.google.com/search?q=a7v333%20%22system%20failed%20memory%20test%22&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8
And I was surprise to see that a lot of people had the same problem as me with this mother board ! It seems that the a7v333 is the "black sheep" of asus as it is told in this forum :
http://www.sysopt.com/userreviews/mboards/reviewhtml/AsusTek_A7V333.html

So, I finally bought a new motherboard, I'm currently installing debian on the system and I guess I'll be playing to my fav' games on my cab very soon now !

Thanks again for your replies guys !
