sticky this emulation stuff

Well guys thanks for all the help. the idea was to list useful mame builds that would help people who were probably just using mame32 I had never heard of misfit mame and I had no idea that what noname mame did other than it combined several versions of mame.

Mameworld (http://www.mameworld.net/) has a good list of all the different MAMES on the left side under the heading Builds/Ports.

1) Any windows version of MAME.
3, 4 and 5) Any commandline build of MAME

I just use the normal commandline mame on my cab.

I understand.  It can be overwhelming at first.  Fortunately, you've found the right place, the BYOAC forums.  Spend a little time here reading some posts and asking questions and you'll be a pro in no time.

As for your needs, you should start out with the
Windows command line version (Pentium Pro optimized)
MAME available from here...

http://www.mame.net/downmain.html

Once you're comfortable with that, you can experiment with some of the other builds floating around on the net.

There are quite a few different front end programs on the net.  I'm using Mamewah in my cabinet and it seems to do the job pretty well for me...

Hantarex Polo 15KHz
Sapphire Radeon HD 7750 2GB (GCN)
GroovyMAME 0.197.017h_d3d9ex
CRT Emudriver & CRT Tools 2.0 beta 13 (Crimson 16.2.1 for GCN cards)
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Intel Core i7-4790K @ 4.8GHz
ASUS Z87M-PLUS Motherboard

that's kinda funny, he's got 300+ posts, and someone with 141 posts tells him to read posts and ask questions!  I think he just didn't phrase his question correctly and he's REALLY just looking for opinions or sites to check out different versions of mame.  (PLEASE don't mind me, just bustin' yer chops!  ;D)

At any rate, Talking Octopus gave you the site to see.  You've gotta do a little research based on what you truly want.  If I'm wrong on what you're looking for, post a more specific "what I need it to do" list, as it seems to me that your variables are so wide-ranging that they crossover/cancel each other in areas.

If I get some time, perhaps I'll post tomorrow what the different version are, but I'm not promisin' NUTTIN'!

Perhaps Howard's FE would work for you.  Not sure, haven't checked it out, as I'm happy with Mame32 so far for my purposes.

Get off your duff and check them out for yourself.... It only involves reading.  I know reading may be scary to you, but you can do it.  I have faith in you.  ;)

Post counts don't mean squat.  I mean, I have less than 200 posts, and there's someone on these boards with 300+ posts who's asking what a vector game is.  Does that mean I don't know what a vector game is?  There are those of us on these boards who don't ask a lot of questions but do read most of the posts and threads.  The result?  Low post count but high knowledge.

I don't mean to go off on you, but I do want it noted that post count != experience or intelligence.

ok let me rephrase.

A I know the difference between a windows based and command line mame.

I wanted to find a list of the different mames so I could compare them. I know there is advance mame, but there are some i had never heard of mameastic.... ok I made that up, but you get the point.

For my needs:
I will be playing this and several other emulators, so something the can be used in a front end

something that allows for light guns
something that doesn't mind that i have a windows xp as my os.

I'll check out the one site. Thanks for the help and sarcasm.

MAME supports a single light gun.
Analog MAME supports more than one lightgun.

Personally, I like NoNameMAME - https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=91067&package_id=95932

Basically, it adds all the improvements into a single build.  So you don't need MAME Analog Plus, or SmoothMAME, or MisfitMAME, etc, b/c these are all rolled into NoNameMAME.

Post counts don't mean squat.

About this, you are 100% correct.  I generalized it because originally he was told to read and post, and someone with over 300 posts HAS read and posted.  As a matter of fact, he asked a similar question just a few days earlier

Quote
I mean, I have less than 200 posts, and there's someone on these boards with 300+ posts who's asking what a vector game is.  Does that mean I don't know what a vector game is?  There are those of us on these boards who don't ask a lot of questions but do read most of the posts and threads.  The result?  Low post count but high knowledge.

Again, good point.  What I'll point out is that before I posted my reply, I was thinking like Howard (SCARY!) i.e. you lazy ass, go check for yerself.  After checking the author's last bunch of posts (there's that high knowledge thingamabob you were talking about, right?), I realized that was KINDA the story, but he'd just posted a similar question a few days ago, and it started to make sense.  I deduced that he wanted info along the lines of his original post, but he wanted a specific answer to a general question, hence my reply, and I stopped thinking he was writing "The Lazyman's Guide To Setting Up A Mame Machine".

Quote
I don't mean to go off on you, but I do want it noted that post count != experience or intelligence.

if you don't mean to do something that requires you to push a "submit" button (when there's a "PREVIEW" button RIGHT NEXT TO IT so you can see the "tone" of your post) then it's simple.  Don't do it.

I feel like Howard :-X.  If you re-read my post, I never said a high post count = "smarts", I just commented that it was kinda funny (or ironic) that he'd obviously DONE some reading/posting.

All in all, he took the info about where to go AND the sarcasm given out (mebbe even had a laugh about it like I did) and posted more pertinent information to get an answer to his question.

To satisfy you, high post counts don't mean JACK.  You prove it yourself, as a matter of fact!

*starting sarcasm now*
You've got more than I do, and your high post count blinded you to the fact that I wasn't even commenting on how intelligent a high post counter is!
*end sarcasm*

I'm not sorry to "go off" on you.  I mean to be an --I'm attempting to get by the auto-censor and should be beaten after I re-read the rules--, reciprocating what you gave by chastising me.  I could have been a lot worse, while not even approaching Howard-like levels. ;D

I'm here to help, which I did, by making him realize he needed to clarify further.  As a bonus, I'll throw in what I think Howard meant.  He meant to say "a$$holes are like opinions; everyone's got one".  See?  I'm helping!
