BYO satellite receiver?

ZWhat is "digital Free to air"?

The way I see it, if they beam a signal through my house, I should be allowed to "read" it if I want to. If they don't want me to tune into their signal, don't beam it through my house!

Anyone ever looked into this? I might want to combine this with a "BYO TiVo", but I can't find that link either...

planetjay knows a lot about satellite i'm going to nudge him to see what he thinks... I haven't seen that particular hauppauge card (maybe it's canadian only?)  kinda neat/interesting.


Hauppauge *does* have a DTV/HDTV whatever tuner card that takes the digital tv signal from the air ... and it's meant to be free boadcasts (i'm sure ATI  has a digital card that does the same)... of course you need to have a local station broadcasting digital programming and be in range.

I don't know what the wording is in the US, but here in Canada the Law states you can watch whatever signal you want...But decrypting that signal is Illegal.  So long as you only what to watch static..no problem.  

I seem to remember some of my old contacts in the States mentioning that it's more strict down there...Personally I think DTV just has more of a stangle hold on the politicians down there to get things "looked after" if you know what I mean

I've been to the BYOPVR site before. I really became intrigued when I thought I could build a PVR with satellite capabilities.

The Hauppage cards: They ONLY pick up the local stations? I am REALLY unframiliar with that side of things...

there are TWO different cards that we are talking about...

I posted an answer/link on the byopvr forum that should clear things up... a little but the gist is:

There's a DTV digital Tv card.. where you can grab digital TV off the airwaves....   which is what I was alluding to.

There's also the satellite nexus -s card you linked to ... which when paired with an appropriate satellite can tune in DVB signals (whatever those are... unencrypted sat signals i guess)... BUT if you want to tune in say your direct TV you need a special add-on AND that little card/PCMIA card specific for descrambling DirectTV (or whatever).

Know what I mean?

I know for a fact that back in the days of garage-sized dishes, two people I know (their parents, actually) got hit with suits against them and my friend's parents ended up paying a settlement fee to them.  

I'm all for the "you put it out there, I should be able to use it" argument, but the way it's legally looked at is that it IS out there, it is NOT beamed "through your house" (I know, you may mean something different, but that's irrelevant to the main point, just using it as an example, is all ), it must be "CAPTURED" through some means.  By "capturing" the signal, you are "subscribing" to their service which requires payment to them for some reason, be it hardware, or the programming, whatever they want to scheme up to get your money.  

While I DO NOT fault you for wanting to do something like this, according to the law, it IS stealing.  To take the argument to ridiculous extremes for the sake of illustration, if someone leaned their bicycle against your fence and left it there overnight, you do not have the right to take it just because "you used MY fence, therefore, I am allowed to do whatever I want with MY "bike rack"".  

People  already have hacked sattelite cards for the recievers they have in their house.  Does that mean it's legal for them to use the equipment "I paid for" to get the NFL ticket for free?  Of course not!  

Kinda ironic to be talking about the legalities of something, seeing as how the general population of mamers are doing something illegal, but....meh!

The men in blue still give you a set of shiny silver bracelets for it, and a free ride!

That's what I'm talking about....what's the use in coming up with the "rationality" if it's only going to be used on you?  I mean, you and me both know that you'd get laughed out of the court room and into a jail cell (well....okay, just a fine) with that argument.

You guys are way too sensitive around here! I only said that I now understand the law (After reading your post, as well as doing a little research on my own.) That's the great thing about the internet: Having a community to steer each other in the right direction.

Just to point out the obvious...  (although it was implied) no theft of service is possible nor being discussed.

The card we were looking at DOES allow a certain type of satellite to recieve "Free" open signals ... planetjay did a nice writeup on his site dvb satellite write up
