Converting CHDs to current version?
« on: March 21, 2004, 02:21:56 pm »
I know it was posted on these boards before, but I can't find it for the life of me.

Anyways, what I have is CHDs that are of a lower version of mame than I have.  What I need is a program to convert them to be used in the mame I have.

Thanks in advance.
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

Here is a link that helped convert some CHDs to be compatible with the newer Mame versions.  But like I said, it only converts some, the other CHDs, you will have to re-download.

wrong on both counts...

You know that seemingly useless chdman.exe that is included with mame?  It's a chdmanagment program.  It'll convert your images for you.  The only catch is the new chd has to have a different name and you need enough space as it essentially copys the original before modifying it.

You know guys, reading the mame docs will answer 99.9% of all your mame-related problems/questions.

whoa, did I get slapped in the face  :-[ or what?!?!?!?!?   ::)

Anyway, this is what was told to me in a newsgroup message (months ago)....  and it's not that I was totally wrong(as you said "wrong on both counts...").  This is how it WAS done,  using diff files and chdman (check out what the link was about).  As I had no need to update my CHD files after using this method, I neglected to research this process any further and so was unaware of the new procedure (of using chdman).

The .diff files are for updating those particular .chd's to the non-corrupted versions.  chdman.exe is for updating the .chd file to the mame >.78 readable version.

But if everybody read the docs, who would be left to ask questions here?   ::)

I'm not being mean, but wrong again..... prior to chdman we had hdman, which was essentially the same thing.  I'm not saying that you couldn't do it with these crapppy third party utilities, but the fact of the matter is.... they are crappy third party utilities.  Chdman can convert several older versions of the chd images while these utilites generally can only do one.... not only that, but these third party utilites don't always check to see which version they are working on and can essentially ruin your chd image unintentionaly.
