Robotron Personal Best?
« on: March 18, 2004, 01:04:36 pm »
I just broke 200,000 on my mame machine. And made it to wave 11!! (default settings)

I thought that it was nigh impossible. Then one game, bam! wave 11, points keep growing ....

My personal best before then was only a hair short of 180,000, and just starting wave 9.

I was in shock and awe, seeing wave 11 for the first time.

So, what is everyone else's personal robotron achievement?

My games: Tapper, Asteroids, Cocktail-MAME, Tron, ROTJ, Tempest, Star Wars (not working)
My wants: Warlords Cocktail

Mine would be getting past wave 2.  Seriously.  For some reason, I have a lot of trouble with the 2 joystick setup.  I mean, I can handle most Fighters, where the button presses have little to nothing to do with what's going on on the screen (from a literal translation standpoint), but when it comes to something that's so intuitive, I have problems.  The bigger problem is that I tend to enjoy these games (Robotron, SmashTV, heck even Krull).

Me I just recently began to get over 100k.

The game is hard, it is hard for me to track where I am shooting and where I am running.

I think I need to watch where I am running and just shoot helter skelter hehe.

My personal best was with a real robotron that I restored. The settings were difficulty level #7 and I rolled the machine which was a major mistake. When you roll the machine the high score table is ruined. A score of just 20k will go on top of the highest score on the table. Also this was done on a machine with the blue roms that have the shot in the corner bug. My favorite wave is wave zero if you think each wave #9 has a lot of grunts just try wave zero.

I play an original Robotron on max dificulty (10) with the rest of the settings left to default.  Best score I got (which was a couple years ago) was in the 700K range.  What I've noticed is about 1 in every 20 games seems to be "easier" than the rest.  I can't explain it, but once you get on a roll, it just keeps going.

My machine is also a blue label rom with the corner shot bug.  Can't tell you how many times that damn bug kept me when I was on a roll! ;D

I can't prove it, but I'm convinced that Robotron is harder in Mame than it is on an original machine. My best on Mame is 748,000, though a typical game is in the 400,000 range (standard settings). Even then, it's a real workout.

The last time I played an actual machine I scored just over 1M, even though I hadn't played in several years. I don't believe the machine was set on easier settings, but who knows.

Its probably harder in mame because you are using digital 8 ways and not leaf switch sticks.  But I bet the arcade machine you played was set to an easier setting.  My machine can be plenty tough.

Back in the late 80's i could play until i wanted to stop , the most i ever played was around 9 million , now i play it but i wont play for more than an hour , guess i just don't have the spare time to waste , it does seem that mame is harder , when set on the same level
