Out Run...
« on: March 14, 2004, 03:29:25 am »
Started playing this one again now I have a steering wheel and pedals on the cab (microsoft sidewinder set.. or it was before I butchered it muhahahah).

Love this game, and it's now much easier than with jsticks lol.

Finished a course (E) for the first time ever tonight - well impressed with myself :)

I have a question though, on the real machine are the pedals digial or analogue? Through mame it's digital, I was wondering if it is supposed to be like that?

Of course what I want now is a real Out Run mini-up machine... I think I will have to check out SuperAuction in Orange on April 10th!!

This evening I noticed the game was on it's hardest settings! No wonder it seemed so tough, changed it down to normal/normal and finished most of the courses.

I guess I am making up for all the time when I was younger that I sucked royally at this game...

The real pedals are analog. I just sold my Out Run today. Had it six months and still never managed to actually finish the game. I THINK I had it set on medium time difficulty and medium difficulty for other cars.

Thanks Paige for the pedal info, is this the case in all versions of Mame that the pedals are set up as incorrect inputs. I remember a few years back there were other problems with Out Run that were subsiquently fixed.

In other news my GF now hates me because she can't get splash wave out of her head. Hey it's Out Run I said, you have to crank the audio up loud - it's a federal law or something...

Closest I ever got to finishing it was when the car stopped just before the last finish line  >:(  That was in the deluxe sit-down moving version but when it only cost 20p (it was 50p in it's hayday)...I couldn't afford to get good at it before then...

There was a post about the pedals in the software forum a week or 2 ago I think.  Basically someone edited the driver to use analog pedals (the code was already there I think) but it caused the shifter to stop working for some reason.  I'm not much use at C but I thought I'd take a look at some point - OutRun is one of my faves :)

Since this thread is in the "everything else" section, thought I would chime in with some barely on topic info.

Go here to get a great update of "Magical Sound Shower" from Outrun in Mp3 form (go to the free mp3 section).  Also much excellent C-64 music here as well:

Miniwah --- if you could get the controls working 100% I'd really be greatful. I'd do it myself of course, but that would mean actually starting to learn computer programming, and as I have proved to myself in the past I don't have any aptitude for it  :(

It's very very playable with the digital pedals, but everytime I don't do as well as I would like part of me is saying --- "that's because the controls arn't right" --- I'd like to get rid of that excuse!

There is just something about this game, I played it straight for 8 hours on Sunday --- I can't remember the last time I did that.

The only REAL issue in using a digital on/off style pedal in the Out Run driver is in that first second when you first take off from a stop, you kind of have to take it easy to avoid spinning the tires.
