How to turn up volume for CPS2 games?
« on: March 12, 2004, 03:22:20 am »
Like D&D Shadows over Mystara, or D&D Tower of Doom.  The default volume is kind of low- I can crank the speakers, but I get the background hiss and it sounds like crap.

I can pull up the settings menu using F2, and see a volume bar (this is in SoM) but I can't figure out how to turn it up.  I'm using Mame 0.77.

Anyone run into this?

I think the volume for all games by default is on max.  So to achieve what you want you'd have to turn *down* all the other games.

Anyone know a better way?

Actually,

the default for MAME is MAX, via the ` key. (the one left of the 1 button on your keyboard) but many games have their volume set to low as the default EPROM settings (Midway is most notable for this).

To fix, press F2, navigate through the menu.  either button 1, or player 1 allow you to select the volume and use the joystick up to increase.

Almost all of the capcom CPS2 games have their volume much lower than other games.  Under F2, there is a volume control but I have never figured out how to change it.  I can only play sample songs and music tests.

MvC 1 and 2 ... and Gigawing are CPS2 games right? If so i think i know the problem.

Where i work (movie theatre) i have been on the inside of these machines (to fix stuff... but mainly to activate freeplay heheh) and on the board there are three blue buttons. 1 of them accesses the system options (i think in mame you press f2) and the other 2 are for volume control.

I remember when the volume on the game was way to loud on these game and i couldnt find anywhere on the service menu where to change the volume.

Then i realized that the other two buttons on the game board were for volume control. One for increasing and one for decreasing.

I think this may be your problem (not 100% sure) as i dont think there are any options for these buttons as it is on the hardware of the cabinet.

anyone wanna confirm this?

I can sorta confirm..... the cps systems have a built in audio amp, so it would make sense to use physical buttons.  (These buttons are confirmed at cps2shock)  As audio amps aren't emulated in mame (for obvious reasons, as pc speakers have built in amps)  these volume control buttons also aren't emulated.

Solution: use the volume control on your speakers :)

I can assure you that the capcom "q-sound" system is emulated perfectly and doesn't cause any distortion when you amplify it. (It's one of the oldest sound engines in mame) So if you are getting hiss from your speakers then you have a bad sound card, amp, or speaker system.

I know that's not the answer you wanted to hear, but it's the truth.  :(
