Rowe R-86 sprag issue: magazine doesn't latch, sometimes
« on: June 08, 2026, 01:13:45 pm »
Things work fine most of the time, but when the selected record is adjacent, or very near, to the previous play, the magazine rotates and then, when the motor stops, the magazine bounces back a bit (like when your car bounces a little backward after you come to a stop) and fails to latch in place.

This leaves the magazine in no-man's land so the transfer arm either throws the record or tries to stuff it into the wrong slot.

When the magazine has to travel farther, it still bounces back, but with enough force that it rebounds itself into place.

I've confirmed that the optical switch is working and properly calibrated.

I'm assuming the problem lies in the sprag assembly.

Things I've tried, and which haven't worked:

1) Adjusted the tension spring tighter/looser

2) Made sure everything was lubed.

3) Loosened/tightened the bolts that hold down mechanism assembly (thinking that might affect the inertial behavior of the magazine).

My best guess is that the teeth on sprag wheel have worn down and have allowed things to get sloppy.

Sound reasonable? Or is there something else I might be missing?
