MAME with recent games enabled.
« on: March 05, 2004, 01:04:40 pm »
I'm having trouble compiling my own version of MAME with recent games, like Rage Of Dragons and KoF2K2 enabled for my new arcade cab.  Anyone recommend a good binary of MAME I can download for that?  It can be for DOS, Windows, or Windows command line.

These new games are "illegal" according to the mame devs and this is why they were removed.  Asking for a binary to a "bootleg" build of mame is the same as a rom request so please ask about this elsewhere.  :)

Whoa...never thought I'd see the day that I'd be seated at the ROM kiddies table.  :o OK then, if that's how the devs feel, I withdraw my question.

Well, I think HC may have jumped to a conclusion here...How do we know whether or not you already own the PCB's? Maybe you want to do some testing or something useful?  :-\

Anyway, I don't have an answer for you. But, yes the MAME devs do not have those games in current MAME releases for a reason. You might want to try some of the Emu sites forums for learning about how to compile MAME, etc..

And back to Howards reply.

Its against the mame devs license to release a version with those games enabled.  Doing so really really pisses them off.

And since they work hard for your enjoyment... Why not enjoy the other 4000 games?

btw... if you haven't noticed... those games really stink.

but you CAN download the old source... compile it yourself... and keep a few versions handy.  It only takes about 5 minutes to compile mame... Its really not as hard as it used to be.

Doesn't matter, rom legality aside (Btw Just for the record there isn't a such thing except for starroms as running "backup copies" of games is illegal in any form according to the dmca.) I was referring to the fact that it violates the mame liscense and therefore it'd illegal to publically distrbute a binary with those games enabled.

I never jump the gun, I just think 3 steps ahead of the average person. ;)

Btw, lilwolf already figured my meaning out, I just replyed to clarify my reasons for your benefit.

OK, but I don't see where he said he wants to  "publically distribute" or "release a version" of his build. He wants it for his own personal use, so I don't really see any issue here.

No, he didnt say he wanted to distribute it, he just asked who does.... and then they would be the ones violating the license

I think he was really asking for information on how to compile MAME. as he mentioned, he was "trying to compile" his own version. Not just looking for a "bootleg" version. He just wants information on how to compile his own version, "bootleg" or not. Come one, you guys are being a little over cautious if you ask me. None of you have even asked him about his true intentions on the project, so how can you possibly KNOW HIS INTENTIONS? You can't!  Yet you are all jumping to conclusions, as usual...

Sorry, but this attitude pisses me off. I DO NOT condone illegal activity, but I also do not condone presumptuousness.

MagnetEye maybe you should learn how to read.  I don't think he meant any harm, but it's QUITE CLEAR that he has asking for a download.  Binary = compiled version of mame in case you don't understand that.

I don't presume anything... I just have been around here long enough to know exactly what someone is talking about with a single line.

You have a real attitude problem towards me sometimes.  I haven't said anything rude in this post at all and yet your already jumping all over me.  Telling people the truth straight out is NOT being rude, it's being honest.  You should get that straight in your head and leave me alone please.

Hey... since we're on the subject do you guys know a site or a tutorial that explains compiling your own version of mame pretty well.  I've been wanting to give it a shot but have been to intimidated.  Is it really as easy as you say lilwolf? :)

Before you get flamed by a certain someone, I'll answer. Go to http://www.mame.net/compile.html and check out the faq on compiling. You'll need to get the compiler, source code for mame, and some other tools.

Off of flaming here.... Just some info.

Mame used to take a few hours to get everything setup to compile... It was a PAIN!  Then every 3 or 4 versions you had to look around to figure out what to do next...

Now... you download the preset set of tools...  You download the source... and you follow a few directions from the www.mame.net howtocompile tab... and your basically done.

NOTE:  I've had to run make a few times in the past... when I ran out of memory... I think this is fixed (but I also now have 500mg ram... so that might have been the trouble.

make clean will clean everything out for you.

Its also good to do this because the executables are LARGER... this is good because then it can load only the parts of mame being used (saving memory)... the compressed versions require the ENTIRE app to load in memory to uncompress it.

Anyway... its about 20 - 30 minutes complete with reading the instructions... about 10 minutes I'm sure if your used to the tools..

Ok, let me get this strait... it's illegal to modify and redistribute free of charge, a program that is designed to play games illegally?  That just seems a little strange to me.
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

I probably should let this thread die...but

to crashwg

Emulation is NOT illegal... in fact... there have been laws that SPECIFICALLY make it legal on systems where the hardware is not made (forgot the exact terminology) but it basically makes it legal to emulate systems that aren't being sold and can not be purchased in any real mannor.

BUT!

its AGAINST mames license to emulate any of the new games!

Not ILLEGAL because of emulation... ILLEGAL because its against the license that mame has.

This is one of the reasons it hasn't been GPL'd

but you are lot LEGALLY to use code against its license.  (so if I had a open source text editor that I have in the license that you can use the code UNLESS you use it for editing XML files.... people could do anythign with it... BUT creating XML files....)...
