What screen to replace a 25" crt?

I have a cabinet that previously had a 25" CRT monitor in it, what would be the best option to replace this with a 16:9 flat screen?  I'd like to keep the cost down as much as possible.

A 40" tv mounted vertically - would any TV be okay for this or is there anything I'd need to consider (viewing angles/refresh/input lag etc?  Are older TVs bad for this sort of thing?)
A 27 inch monitor mounted horizontally - would lose a bit of height vs the 25, but screen may be better than the tv?
A 32 inch monitor mounted vertically - loses maybe too much width vs the 25?

A few different screens should fit in there I would think.
Most seem to opt for vertical orientation for lcds in original cabinets it seems, but nothing beats a good ol' CRT.
I'll take that old 25" if you don't want it though.
I can rebuild that thing and it will probably last 20 years without needing any more work.

things to note regarding TV's:

tv's typically have "overscan", area around the image is cropped out and the image stretched to refill the screen. this gets rid of broadcasting artifacts like timing marks. while lots of tv's this can be turned off... some cannot and you will lose some image when used with another source like computers and whatnot where all the pixels presented are expected to be seen.

tv's typically don't power back on when the power is restored. you will have to find a way to power it back on when AC is reapplied. this can be difficult with some TV's
