Control Panel Overlay - graphic quality?
« on: March 02, 2004, 03:20:16 am »
I am considering using the following graphic (I think I originally got it from Massive Mame project website, but it doesn't seem to be there anymore?) for my CPO on my new cabinet and am wondering if anyone who has used this image before could tell me how the print quality came out??

Here is a preview of the image:

The fullsize jpg is 6048x2261 in size, but only 771kb. (you can view the full size one  here )

I'd need it printed to 85cm x 33cm (I'd crop it to this size, not stretch).  Would it look ok at this size?  If not, does anyone have a similar vector image I could use?  I really like the blue and black colours.

Also, is it best to get the overlay printed on self adhesive paper? I'll be putting a sheet of plexiglass over the top so I'm wondering if the adhesive is really needed as it will be held in place by the plexi?

That is a pretty good image, could also use it as a marquee.

As far as the cp goes, you would have to see where the buttons and controls are placed.

If it's under plexi, you do not need adhesive. It will not move.

Any pics of your cab?

The tree and mountain will look a bit blurry.

Printers sometimes have trouble with deep blues also. Make sure you use a printer with a good rep.

I openned this up in photoshop.  Photoshop says it is 24" by almost 9" at 252 resolution.  What a weird resolution.

It will probably print ok, 300 resolution is considered print quality.

Thanks for the replies.  I think I'll go ahead and get it printed and see what it looks like.  I'm going to take it to the printer later this week and see what they think.  I'll post some pics when it is done.

Just came across this thread... yeah that one was an underlay I used on a panel way back when.  Did you get it printed?  Just curious how it turned out.  I took it off the site to save a bit of space since I hadn't seen it used.

Poonga - The resolution was set to something weird, I think it happened during a resize or something like that, and I never changed it back to 300 since, why bother once it's been sized down?  Plus personally I never use photoshop (except to convert to cmyk).  I find that photoshop always does weird stuff to large prints when you save the file, I use PSP with compression turned off and they always turn out nicer, at least for me.

Really, just curious to see if this got used somewhere, since when I did it up I didn't have a digi camera and never took pics :(

So you're the one that came up with this nice underlay?  Well done!  I'm happy to say that I have now had it printed and it came out great!  It looks fantastic underneath the plexi on my new Control Panel and it was the inspiration for the whole theme/colour scheme of the cabinet.  I even made a Marquee with a similar design which incorporated that pic inside the Lettering (see this thread: http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=13;action=display;threadid=16863 )

I'll be posting pics of the new cabinet when it is completely finished - hopefully within the next few weeks.  My control panel is done now, but I'll wait and reveal the whole package.  ;)

The control panel is now finished and can be seen in this thread:
