How do I figure out which rom set I have
« on: February 27, 2004, 01:23:39 pm »
Hi all.  I have a complete Rom set from I'd say around a year or two ago.  I was curious if there's a program or something built into the roms that I can tell which mame set it is?  Thanks all

ClrMAME, @ http://www.clrmame.com will scan/fix based on a .dat file from a particular mame.exe.  Unless you know firsthand which version it came from, there is no way to check.  You'd just go thru the datfiles until you came across one that didn't give you errors.

Side note/question: With ClrMame can't you have it take your existing rom collection and make it compatible with any old Mame version of your choice?

Mostly.  If a ROM has just had its name changed, ClrMAME will change it back.  It can't manipulate a better dump, though.  But it will tell you what is missing so you can make a request.  There are a lot of people that keep the old sets/ROMs around.

If you know its a complete set, simply look at the revision history of mame (whatsold.txt goes back to around mame 0.58) and then compare 'New games added' to each version of mame, and see if you have them. If you work from old->new, as soon as you come across a newgameadded that is not your set, then you know your version of mame.... probably easier than running lots of rom scans.
