Atom-15 not working
« on: May 04, 2021, 07:43:44 pm »

So I have a Dell Optiplex 7010 running win10 x64 and a 6570 card with a VGA to Component Transcoder hooked to a consumer NTSC CRT TV. I’m pretty much done with the PC and I decided to use Atom 15.

The tutorial I followed on Geedorah works great. Dump Bios with ATIflash, check 15 kHz in Atom 15, flash Bios with new modded version, restart. CMD prompt messages show everything worked.

But, I still get my bios screen that puts out a nasty 31khz rolling pic along with the windows boot up screen. Also Additionally I get to my desktop which runs at 480i I’ve noticed my text is blurrier than before.

So I just flashed everything back, text is clear now but it’s really annoying turning on the pc then waiting 20 seconds to turn on the TV to avoid the bad signals. I really want this tool to work.

Any ideas why this just isn’t working?

Does anything interesting happen if (after booting) you disconnect the transcoder for a few seconds, then reconnect?

Hey thanks for the reply - I’m not sure but after googling other users having issues with this tool, I’ve decided to just hibernate the pc. This way when I start it back up it’ll skip the boot up sequence.

Cool, that's a reasonable work around.

May I ask what VGA-component transcoder are you using?

Pretty sure it’s the Retrotek I bought.

  • Is running at 15kHz

If it's a single image (not side-by-side) and only rolling vertically, it will still be 15kHz.

Composite sync circuits can have glitches sometimes, for example when switching from one type of sync to another, or when the input H+V sync voltages vary a bit. Various issues can confuse the logic circuits. That is why I suggested reconnecting the transcoder (resets the sync logic).

BTW I make the GreenAntz RGB to YPbPr transcoder (VGA & SCART versions). We've (my mate & I) done a lot of work on the sync circuit to make it as good as possible. We test them in many ways, including my Win7 machine which has Atom15 installed on the HD6450 video card, and it works flawlessly from boot to Windows with GreenAntz.

Wait...so Atom-15 has a Composite Sync checkbox. Is that supposed to be checked when patching the bios.rom? It doesn’t mention anything about it in the Geedorah tutorial...

I was talking about the composite sync function on the transcoder, not Atom-15. The transcoder has to make the sync composite before mixing it into the luma (green). Don't make it Atom-15 do composite sync, the transcoder will probably work better if you leave the sync from PC as separate H+V. All I was suggesting was that once your atom-15 PC has booted into windows, disconnect/reconnect the transcoder.

Gotcha. Hmm tonight when I get home I’ll reflash the card and then try to disconnect and reconnect the transcoder just to see what happened.

Buttersoft you’re right, the rolling picture is acting like when I try to run a 15khz signal but at 50hz. My TV can’t go that low so maybe it did work, just need to reset the transcoder.

Probably it's 800x600 at 50 Hz, that's the best that can be done for that mode at 15 kHz (16+ actually).

You shouldn't be worried about your tv breaking due to this.

Blur or squashed picture later on Windows may indicate you need to disable Fast Boot in Windows settings.

Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt

So I read the rom.txt document that Atom spits out, I can see the program writing the 800x600@50hz to the card bios.....is there anyway to mod it to just have it flash 480i as the highest resolution to the card? This would help out consumer SDTV users.
