Help with test rig
« on: May 02, 2021, 11:52:16 pm »
Hello, I am building a basic test rig to check some monitors.  I have a TPG for the video so I followed the AC wiring plan on http://arcadecontrols.com/BBBB/acwiring.html to set up
for power.  My question is, what to do about monitors than have a ground?  Only the 2 polarities come off the isolation transformer.

I'm new to monitor repair so please bear with me.  I tried to find the answer to this without any luck so I figured I'd come back to the place where I started reading about arcades, MAME, and cab building...BYOAC.

Welcome back, ArcadeNerd.

My question is, what to do about monitors than have a ground?  Only the 2 polarities come off the isolation transformer.
The main purpose of the isolation transformer is isolating ground on the monitor from ground on the rest of the cab.

I'm sure you already know this, but DO NOT connect the ground on a monitor that needs an isolation transformer to ground on the rest of the cab . . . unless you want to blow up that monitor.   >:D

Monitors that have a 3-prong (hot/neutral/ground) power cable don't need an isolation transformer.

first thing you need to do is correctly identify your monitor make/model because some monitors require certain input voltages to work
for instance if you connect a nanao ms8 direct to the mains it will blow up as it needs an isolation transformer to run correctly
if you connect a hantarex polo1 to direct mains it will run perfectly

Could you add a secondary outlet that taps off before the isolation transformer, and include a ground?  I mean, like if you were to buy a panel mount outlet, like this and just run the wires to the power and ground before the isolation transformer, then when using a monitor that requires ground, you can plug it into the receptacle, as monitors that require an isolation transformer should never have a normal outlet harness, buy you could just put a note on the panel that its not an isolated receptacle.

Thanks for the info so far.

Would it hurt the monitor that doesn't "need" an isolation transformer to just hook up the 2 polarities from the isolation transformer and not have a ground going to it or would I likely shock myself or blow something up?  This would just be to test the monitor (hook up the TPG to check stuff out) not in a cab long term.

Thanks!
