Ok, I must be hitting some keystroke combination that exits MAME.

Example: Playing Joust. Joust is a single button (flap) game, and at some point (playing two players), we must hit a certain combination of buttons that causes the to exit.

This happens with all games.

My setup:
IPAC 2
Mamewah
MAME .77

Thanks for your help!

Yep, you said the keywords, 2 players.   By default, the ipac uses player 1 start as the shift button and player 2 button as esc when shifted.

Arghh - I forgot that...hrmm. Is there any way to disable this without having access to the IPAC? The reason I ask is because the IPAC is *permanently* buried in this cab:
http://www.aaronmurray.com/default.asp?page=arcade/dans_cab.htm

Also, I seem to think the problem occurs at other times....ex: not when both players hit start. But that may be it - I'll have to do some more "testing"

Thanks SirPoonga. If anyone else has ay ideas, I'd love to hear em.  I'll try to remember to post back when I verify what the problem is...hopefully sooner than later.

Well, I highly suggest you take your IPAC, switch it from mame to the other jumper.  Program your IPAC and modify your mame settings.  If you use windows you will run into ctrl and alt combos too.

you can look at my mappings to get an idea
http://free.hostdepartment.com/S/SirPoonga/keys.htm

my buttons are laid out like
123
456

I use ctrlr files to map the buttons in mame.

you won;t need to.  all you need to do is move the jumper on the ipac so you can program it.

Hehe, yea, I will  ;)

That CP has the IPAC in it. It had to in order to limit the number of wires coming out of the axle ends...
trackball, dual tornado spinners, ipac, power for trackball and tron handles, etc...

Heh, guess I don't see it.  You cabinet looks like a normal cabinet.   i have my ipac on the inside of the cabinet.  i only have three "wires" coming out of the control panel.  The cord I made with db25 connectors to the ipac, the tball and spinner usb cords.

Ahh, thats the prob. I should have explained better. That cab has a rotating control panel ala 1up/Frosty.

Perhaps this pic will help.

I don't know - I've been out of it for a couple of months....because of this cab. It took about 2.5 months of straight nights/weekends work from start to finish...and I was hating arcade machines after it.

I don't even know what the minipac is
