CRT EMUDriver only works with 2 monitors
« on: December 22, 2020, 12:34:50 pm »
Hi Everyone,
I'm rebuilding my Mame cabinet/PC to take advantage of all the new features available on newer HW/SW.  It's been challenging but I think I'm almost there.  Only one small issue:

- After several attempts, I was able to get the CRT EMUDriver working for my AT! 4600 series card on Windows 10.  I also have a lcd plugged into the on-board Intel video controller for setup only.
- If I unplug the LCD, the CRT video is no longer good.
- If I disable the video controller, video is no longer good.
- If I boot out of test mode, video is no longer good
          - Since I couldn't get the driver to load in windows due to signing issues.  I gave up on this as I read it is OK to leave it in this mode
- I guess I could keep an extra monitor but the engineer in me begs to question why?  I've searched quite a bit for something similar but I've yet to find something.   Has anyone else experienced this?  Thanks.

Read this guide carefully and follow it to the letter.

You will need a DVI-I to VGA adapter/dongle, but only temporarily.

Thanks.  I'm currently using the DVI to VGA dongle but I'll glean this again to see where I went wrong.

Well, it looks like I royally screwed this up.  My LCD is plugged in to on-board video controller.  I can disable display and CRT still works but reboot goes to poop.   I think I may have to start over as I get zero output to LCD by plugging into DVI dongle.  So close :(

The HD4XXX cards are a real pain to get working properly on Win7/10 through VGA as the primary and only GPU head. Something to do with EDID emulation not being supported I think.

I was having an almost identical issue last week with my HD4650 card on Win7 and couldn't find my dongle anywhere! So I gave up, ordered a new dongle and moved onto something else.

Then on the same day the new dongle arrived, I found the old one in a video card box.  :laugh2:

It took a couple of failed attempts and my setup didn't quite mirror exactly the same but it is now working with the back of the cabinet buttoned up.  The major differences from my original setup to the right way:

- When I started the process, the LCD was connected to the on-board Intel 4600 and the CRT attached to the ATI 4600 series via DVI dongle..  Those duplicate numbers didn't help either.
- Through my trial and tribulations I had the setup working until I was unable to remove the LCD.  Thanks for your link.  I found the documentation very good.

- Completely uninstalled the emu driver and reinstalled the standard msft driver.
- put LCD on the DVI dongle and CRT on VGA port  of the ATI card.  (I believe this to be the major culprit of my issue)
- Ran setup again and I now have video on both displays.
- followed process verbatim and was able to remove LCD from the system
   -  Unlike the instructions,  when I re-detected monitors the CRT did not go blank.
- In the end, I can boot without the LCD connected.
- System is still in test mode and will likely stay there as I don't want to debug that one.  At least, for awhile.

Hope this helps someone along the way.
