Area51, Playstation & Gun
« on: February 19, 2004, 04:16:12 pm »
I have Area51 for the playstation, and in the book it says that you can use a light gun, buy my Guncon (which I got with Time Crisis) doesn't work on it.  I tried them both on the PS2 with the Guncon just incase it was my playstation, and got the same result, Time Crisis works Area51 doesn't.

Am I doing something wrong?  Will a different light gun help?  Maybe a Guncon2, they have those right?

Oh, man I want to play Area51 the way it was inteded to be played... :-\
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

I've herd of compatibilitiy problems of some PSX lightgun games played through the PS2 (which is really just emulating psx).

I thought it ment you can't use the usb type guncon2 on psx games...but it sounds like you are using the older guncon through a ps2 and it still isn't working?

Yea, I can't get the Guncon (original one) to work, with Area51, on the Playstation, PSOne, or PS2.

I'm wondering if they just forgot to ad the light gun support to the game or something, because it works fine with Time Crisis...

You just need a regular lightgun,or a Guncon compatible gun that can operate in non-guncon mode.  Here's one that works:

Is this information you're giving me come from experience?  Have you used this particular gun with Area51?

Yes and yes.  This gun has settings for both guncon and non-guncon mode, you just need to make sure that the gun is set to normal mode for non-guncon games and guncon mode for guncon games (before powering up your PS).  I bought two of these guns off of ebay a ways back, because they work with PS1/PS2 and for Guncon/Guncon2 games (as well as non-guncon games).  It has a kickback feature to it, which is kind of nice (it can be disabled), and comes with a reload pedal.  Another gun that will do the trick, for PS1 only, is the Nyko Super Cobra Lightgun.  This will work for guncon and non-guncon games for PS1 (but not guncon2 for PS2):

Hope this helps.

Nope.  Unfortunately there is not a simple way to do it.
