Some MAME games are very small
« on: June 16, 2020, 08:30:34 pm »
Hi guys,
I have recently returned to the scene after many years. I did not have bezels loading with my MAME games, so after getting them to work today, I noticed the game play was much smaller in size on my monitor. This makes sense as there needs to be room for the bezel on the screen as well.

I didn't like how small the games looked, so I turn off the bezels. Most games returned to their normal size, however there are still some games that are still very small (even without the bezels). Games like Centipede returned to normal size, but Ms Pacman and Pacman still are very small on the monitor (almost half the size of filling the screen top to bottom like they used to).

I have changed settings from within same.ini as well as within the game menu while in-game. Same result.

Can someone please help me figure out how to get all games back to their normal size, so they fill the screen (at least top to bottom for vertical games)?

Thank you!

If your artwork exists, but you want the game screen to be full view size, set artwork_crop 1 in your mame.ini.

Check your ini and cfg folders. Maybe you have individual settings stored for those games.

Somehow my keepaspect in MAME.ini got changed. I also now have individual ini files for those games where I have made changes to bezels and screen size.
All is looking good now.

Thanks guys!

That's how mame works.  When you change settings in-game they are saved on a per-game basis.  This is why it's usually best to change them directly in the mame.ini unless you need to tweak something for a specific game.  Get used to notepad... it'll be your constant companion for years to come.

keepaspect is an important one to keep on.

turning it off will cause vertical games, such as pacman, to use the full width of your monitor and be horribly distorted as those games used a vertical screen

as most monitors are widescreen these days, and most arcade monitors were not, it will also cause significant ugly distortion on most horizontal games too if turned off

I'm not sure what you feel you've achieved by turning it off, but turning it off is always the wrong option.

You can create an ini file for vertical games. Read The Mame docs for more info.
