  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
Please help monitor black out issues!
« on: April 13, 2020, 08:27:45 pm »
I own a stand-up arcade cabinet housing an old Windows XP machine which runs a bunch emulators on it. It's worked fine for the last 10 years but over the last week the monitor started blacking out in the middle of games. I can still hear the games but the screen just goes black. Now, it's to a point where it barely turns on for a second before going black. I have some pictures below, but can't figure out how to get inside to see what kind of monitor it is. I know it's not something you can't fix over the internet but I spend hours and hours playing this with my 7 year old daughter so I am desperate to talk to someone about this. Anyone out there? I'm in Los Angeles by the way. Please? Someone on reddit recommended you guys and you are honestly my only hope during these trying times!

You might try an arcade/amusement repair place in LA, or someone who sells custom-built arcade machines locally. There are lots of those latter businesses in Aus, so hopefully there are a few over there as well.

It looks like an lcd monitor to me, if it is, just buy one and swap it, should be straight easy.

looks like LCD to me... probably a backlight inverter issue. kinda easy to fix on some monitors... pain in the butt on others. universal 4 lamp inverters are available on ebay for like 10 bucks. feed them 12 volts and they'll just go. you don't have to go all crazy with the backlight brightness or turn on signals from the LVDS board.
