This question should be under SOFTWARE forum, but at any rate, yes there is.  Its in the mame documentation.

First of all I did read the manual and all i found was savestate but it didn't look like what I was looking for because it said it was only for developers and didn't work for everything.  Second of all this is case #323445435453454354 of jerks like you on the board who can take the time to type in and berate people instead of taking less time to just answer their question.  Just because people are new and maybe couldn't find something or understand it fully, hell, even if they just didn't have the time to look, is it really that big a deal?  Isn't that the whole point of the board, to help people?  If I found a question that someone had that even I knew because it was so simple, I'd take the 2 seconds to answer it for them instead of being a jerk to them.  I've only been able to help one person, and have had lots of questions.   Many of which go unanswered or get idiot remarks like yours.  I'm better off talking to myself, which I will do from now on, and do without this place.  Thanks for nothing.

Holy crap.....  I went to the Mame FAQ and found it in 10 seconds, and I had never thought of this question before.

H07. Can I save my game and resume it later?

This feature is being slowly implemented because it can be helpful to MAME developers. It's an especially complex feature, so only a small portion of the drivers support it. If you want to try it, press Shift-F7 and any key to save a state, and F7 and the key you previously pressed to load a state. This way you can save more than one state, for example by pressing A, B, C, etc. after the save or load state key. However, don't expect all drivers to work properly with this.

Howard treats everyone here the same, don't take it so personal.  Just do a little bit of research for even 5 minutes and you can find some of this stuff.

I really hope crapjoint doesn't choose to go with DragonKing as a frontend!

Hey guys, I see both sides of the argument here. Sure, newbs should do some research, but why be so harsh? If things are really that easy/quick to find/search for, then post up a link or the answer...and if you have to, mention the fact that you feel the person is wasting your time.

But at least give the guy an answer with his grief.

People seem to forget that everyone was a newb at some point...and if you have to chime in about never benig a newb, then you also have memory loss to go with your ego complex.

Hey I wasn't harsh at all, I was honest.  A common man gives a person the answer outright due to their shot-sightedness.  A wise man has them seek out the answer because they know that in the journey they will learn far more than they ever could by being fed the answers to other trivial questions.

When you are starting out I refuse to help you unless you do two things.  Go over the byoac site... three times.  Read the mame faq... three times.  Then if you don't find your answer you are more than within your rights to ask, otherwise you just haven't done any initial research and you are wasting everyone's time and disrespecting those who spent their valuable time creating these resources so that these general questions won't be asked again and again.

And for the record that was a light-hearted comment meant in fun.  When I'm harsh you'll know it by the tears running down your cheak or your red face and high blood pressure.   8)

Howard, you are a funny guy. I love your mixture teach a man to fish and Mr. T style 'your mom is fatter than mine so it is time to die' paths to wisdom.

In real life, you are correct, the best thing a guy can do is enable others vs just feeding them bits.

NEWS FLASH: This is the Internet (made by Al Gore)

The guy just wanted a simple answer. If he is truly hungry for knowledge, he'll find out quickly that RTFMing and reading FAQs is much quicker. Otherwise, he'll ask a couple quick questions (which actually makes the search function useful when the answers are posted), and then leave. His post count will max out at 27 we'll never hear from him again. So it goes.

Off the record, all of my comments are in good spirit. I know you come across a bit harsh, but the newbs don't. Keep it real. Keep it fun. Keep it real fun. ;)

If you'll note, I did give him the answer he was looking for right out of the FAQ.  I can understand being put off, but to then quadruple the flame power back at everyone else.... probably not such a good idea eh?

Nailz, you are correct- you did give him an answer. Sorry, I should have been more clear. I was repsonding to the 3 replies that he got to his initial question - before he replied and complained, before you then gave the answer.

In general, people seem to flame newbs. I am just saying perhaps we should give them a break, or at least give them an answer with the flame.

I'm not trying to quadruple anything, especially flame power.

Soslo, no prob, although I wasn't actually claiming you were flaming anyone at all, it was directed at crapjoints knee-jerk reaction.  My only point was that, yes, indeed, maybe people shouldn't have quite so harsh, but his reaction was above and beyond and certainly didn't help his cause, because there are always people that are going to come along to defend the newbies.

I am usually one of those, but his flipping out wasn't necessary either.

Either way, peace!   ;D

Very true - he flipped out. It probably wouldn't have been such a big deal it he would have omitted that last two lines.
