Other FE's with this layout?
« on: February 17, 2004, 10:48:43 am »
Are there any other front ends that use a layout similar to this?

This is AdvanceMenu (in tile_normal mode) which is what Im currently using.

Im working on a TV so I dont rely too much on lists of games, or a list and composite pictures, like marquee, snapshot, cabinet, etc. [edit- With a ful lromset, plus other emulators. Even pared down to unique games the list is still in the thousands, making it much easier to navigate than going though page after pageof blurry text

The less text the better- as you can see in the pic theres a title by each picture, and a line at the top and bottom for game status and information. The rest is all navigated by using the keyboard/joystick to a game and pushing start.. The left stick goes 1 square at a time, the right stick up and down is mapped to go a page at a time

Ive looked at and tried most of the available FEs here and from mameworld.net, but none appear to have this as one of their modes

Am I just missing some, or is Advance really my only otion for this look?

You can do it with about every one of the frontends that are talked about here.

because they are all skinnable... I haven't skinned the others... but in mine (JFront) you can specify how many preview images... and place them anywhere you want.  You can have a duplicate of the current one... along with the marquee (but only the current one for the marquee... but that will probably change never version... but for other reasons)...

so you could do that....

but MAN is it ugly.  Is this for a cabinet?

I would recommend skinning your own... Text is the only thing thats usually hard to see on a TV...  Get rid of the text but for the current... and get rid of the rest... then have some previews...

remember... you MIGHT want to have it running during the day... and you have to look at it...

Agreed... you CAN do it, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's a good idea.  That's fugly with a capital F man.

Lilwolf, do you have a link for your Jfront, or is that a private version, I couldnt really find anything other than a few posts mentioning it

I have been playing with some of the other ones the last day or 2.. Mamewah in particular has been impressive for its layouts and customizablity. I dont recall that that stuff was available or advanced last time I checked it out, so that may be why I was turned off to it in the past
