First read the file Layouts.txt - this should explain how the system works pretty well...

Basically, you should have a structure something like this:

c:\mamewah\layouts\classic 640x480\layout.lay
                                 \classic 800x600\layout.lay
                                 \classic 1024x768\layout.lay

If you want to make your own layout, create a new folder, like this:

c:\mamewah\layouts\demonseed\

Then open the Layout Designer, make your layout and save the file as 'layout.lay' in the above folder.  All associated images / sounds should be placed in that folder too, and named as per the instructions in Layouts.txt.

Then all you need do is enter the 'Layout Name' in the Misc Options menu of MAMEWAH as 'demonseed' (no full path required) and Bob's your uncle :)

Ok read the help at screenshotarchive.com but still do not get it.. maybe someone can help me. heres what I did

1.downloaded fight 800x600.zip
2. Unzipped to d:/mamewah/layouts
(it made folder fight 800x600 in d:/mamewah/layouts)
(contained 2 files layout.lay and  fight background.jpg)
3. went into Mamewah.cfg located in d:/mamewah/files.
4. edited line in MISC OPTIONS section. added Layout name = fight 800x600.
5. Ran mamewah same old background.

To my understanding that is all I need to do? but its not working for me. any help? anyone post a template or something for an idiot like me?

thanks
JIM

Did you make sure that your graphics are following the correct naming scheme?

example:
emu1-main.jpg
background for emulator 1

good luck

The Skin you downloaded was created for an older version of Mamewah and so will not work "out of the box" with the new version.  What you'll need to do is:
  • Extract the fight800x600 zip file to a folder called "fight800x600" under the "layouts" directory in Mamewah.
  • Change the name of .lay file in this directory to "layout.lay"
  • Change the name of the jpg file to "main.jpg".  (I'm going from memory here, so you may wanna check the "layouts.txt" file for the exact name to use)
  • Make sure your Mamewah.cfg file in the Files folder points to the "fight800x600" directory
From memory this should be enough.  If you still have problems, let me know and I'll send you the modified files.  (I'm actually using that skin at the moment to test out Mamewah on my TV  :))

All the skins on the Mamewah skins Page1 were created for older version of Mamewah and need to be renamed to work in the latest version.  All the Skins on Page 2 should have the correct naming standard used - although you will need to make sure your emulator numbers match the number used by the skinner.  (ie. You may use emu3 as Nintendo whereas someone else has it set as NeoGeo)

If I get some time over the next week, I may go over all my older skins and rename the files to work in the newest version of Mamewah.

That is right, thanks Stuzza :)

Hey Guys,
It worked like a charm thanks got it running great! I need some help further if you can. I am not sure how to use the layout.txt file. I want to be able to change the images add images like marquees and logos and change backgrounds for each emulator. I have read through the layouts.txt but dont grasp it. For example:

Backgound Images:

emu?-main.???   emulator specific main backgound image
main.???      general layout main backgound image

HOW DO I USE IT?? my emulator one os M.A.M.E so above I do? emu1-main.jpg? The file emu1-main.jpg would be the image I want to be used as mame background?

Do i need to point to a certain dir? or just place emu1-main.jpg into LAYOUTS folder?

I think it would be really great if someone would be kind enough to email me their config that would really help...

HEEH once I get this figured out then i have to figure out how to make custom lists.. EERRR!!

Thanks for all the help!

Ok I tried this but did not work. Any advice?

1. took mame.png renamed to emu1-logo.png.
2. placed emu1.logo.png in MAMEWAH/LAYOUTS/
3. changed layouts.txt in MAMEWAH to this;

Logo Images (??? may be BMP, GIF, JPG, PCX or PNG):

emu?-logo.???               emulator specific logo image
logo.???               general layout logo image
[MAMEWAH-PATH]\LAYOUTS\mamewah-logo.gif
[MAMEWAH-PATH]\LAYOUTS\emu1-logo.png   MAMEWAH's default logo image

RAN APP but MAME log does not show.. only mamewah-logo? any ideas why? i know its default but i told i to use emu1-logo?

please help thanks! many thanks
Jim

Yes, name the file emu1-main.jpg, and place it in \MAMEWAH\LAYOUTS\LAYOUTNAME, where LAYOUTNAME is the sub-folder name of YOUR layout, within the MAMEWAH layouts folder.  Read me first reply again, it explains this...

I think you are getting confused by Layouts.txt - that file is only instructions on how the system works, you never need to alter it.

The only other thing you need to do is enter LAYOUTNAME as your 'Layout Name' under 'Misc Options' in MAMEWAH - I highly advise doing it from MAMEWAH and not editing the CFG file directly.

Hello,
I tried what you said and it worked great! The skins like just beautiful! I love Mamewah very easy to use and set up! Awsome job! THANK U!!

A few more questions too fine tune.

1. Mame Artwork ie) CAB shots, MARQUEES etc.. where can I download them all in one or a few files? I know before ppl had sites serving pics.

2. MAMEWAH- Can I create lists based on Genres of games? ie) Sports, Fighting, Puzzle? But have it on the same mame screen and not flip an emultor every different category?

great fe!!

1) http://www.classicgaming.com/mame32qa/down.htm has some cabinet shots, just search google for other stuff.

2) Yes, using Custom Lists.  You still have to switch between lists, but remaining on the same emulator.  Go into the Games List Options, pick 'Select Custom List' and then use the 'Generate Custom List using Filters' menu to create the list.  Repeat this as neccessary...
