so, i am trying to get mamewah to play an arcade MP3 while people "browse" through games. I set the correct path but nothing is playing. I can't figure out why...

anyone have any ideas?

Hmmm, first make sure you have pointed to a folder rather than 1 specific file. If you have done this, try putting >1 sound file in said folder...failing both post back

Ok, lemme see here. Couple questions: To play a sound file do they HAVE TO be named like you have in the help file? i.e. intro, navigate, etc? Because I was trying to just place an mp3 in there and put in the path to it, with no luck.

I then tried naming the file "intro" but when I launch a game, the mp3 keeps playing! and navigate didn't work either, it would loop like the first 2 seconds of the mp3.

What I am trying to accomplish is when mamewah boots up, the mp3 starts playing and doesn't stop until I launch a game. When I come back the mp3 starts again from the top. What I have is the Arcade Ambience mp3 with my 80's Arcade skin.

How can I get the result I seek?

OK lets say your Arcade Ambience MP3 is called 'arcade.mp3'...bung this file into any folder, eg c:\music. Then point to this folder in your MAMEWAH 'Music Path'. If 'Play Music While Browsing' is set to Yes that should be all.

Sounds like you had done everything right, but if you only have 1 MP3 in your music folder, try adding another in there to see if it makes a difference.

The intro, navigate etc. are purely for the event sounds, don't worry about those.

Yeah, it makes sense....but it isn't working. I made a folder, have 2 mp3's in there. set 'YES' to browsing, set correct path, but it doesn't play.

I had the folder in the MAMEWAH DIR, so then moved it out and tried again, still nothing. I dunno wth is going on, I can't get a sound file to play.

How does it work? Could there a conflict with WinAmp on my system or something like that?

Magnet_Eye, are you using Win98? I've tried setting up the MP3 background music on two different systems with Win98 but couldn't get it working. I tried WinXP recently on one of these computers and it worked fine.

Nope, i am using WinXP Pro.

It should work fine in XP. Oddly enough on the 1 Win98 test system I have used it worked fine too.

Make sure you have Windows Media Player installed, I don't think it should matter if it is your default player but you could try that.

Also, try some different MP3's - I have had a couple of reports of certain MP3's not playing for some unknown reason.

Sound problems seem to be my biggest headache. Annoyingly it works *perfectly* on all the systems I've tried - just one of those things I guess...

Version 8 should be fine. Odd that the sounds work (these are played back using EXACTLY the same method as the music)...

I placed a folder called SOUNDS in the MAMEWAH folder. The mp3 is called "arcade83.mp3" so I dunno wth is going on with it. I also just tried putting a different mp3 in there (vanhalen_jump.mp3), and it doesn't play either. Talk about frustrating!

Oh, and I also changed mp3's default player to Windows Media just in case. Still no go!

I'm gonna try it on my other machine later tonight, I'll let you know if it works on that one. $:-\$

can open you mamewah config file with notepad and copy the entry with the MP3 path in your next post? This should clear any doubt as to whether the config is done properly.
Also I think mamewah has its own volume control so can you try and bring the volume up just in case it's the problem? (I think the music and sounds have separate volumes, and we have already establishde that sound effects work.)

No, I only had the ancient version that was installed with Win98. The computer is in a cabinet with no internet connection so I never bothered to install it. I usually use just WinAmp.

not gonna be the problem...just so you know, here are the lines from the mamewah.cfg:

;AUDIO OPTIONS
Sound / Music Volume (%) = 100
Music Path = E:\GAME FILES\MAMEWAH\SOUNDS\ARCADE83.MP3
Play Music While Browsing = True
Play Music During Screen-Saver = True

It just hates me. It won't play the damned file!

You need to leave out ARCADE.MP3 out of the config file, you just want the path to the directory, not to the MP3 file

ok...I got the mp3 here:

warning, its like 90 megs! It's a 66 minute long arcade sound file. Other sound clips from this guy: http://users.adelphia.net/~hofle/arcade/

Well, I tried it on my other XP system (in my cabinet), and it works like a champ! I dunno why it doesn't work on my main pc. No biggie though. It is working on my cab, and that's all that matters right now.

The only differnence is that the install on my cab of XP is fresh, and windows media is default player...i still wonder if winamp is somehow causing an issue on my main pc.

well, i'm happy for now...though the issue was never solved on this machine.
