FAT32 or NFTS for file system?
« on: February 09, 2004, 04:30:17 pm »
I am installing WinXP on to a new hard drive. This will only be used to run MAME. Which file system should I use? ( I am not bringing any files across from any existing hard drives).

Personally I prefer NTFS on XP.  I don't really know why, I just do  ;D

I think there was a thread recently about the very same, with perhaps some more helpful insights as to 'why'...

Thanks MINWAH, found the thread. Still don't know what to go for lol. I guess NFTS will do.

NTFS is better in virtually every way, with the exception of being recognized by other Fat32 partitions.

More secure....much better support for large disks.  With Windows XP you can apparently only format volumes up to 32 GB.

Here's a comparison done by Microsoft http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/using/productdoc/en/default.asp?url=/WINDOWSXP/home/using/productdoc/en/choosing_between_NTFS_FAT_and_FAT32.asp

May Fat32 rest in peace.

p.s. you'll have to cut and paste that link.  I forget the HTML tags that will clean that up and it's far to late to google for the answer.
