what's new in mame since .63?
« on: February 08, 2004, 09:21:54 pm »
I stopped looking at mame around .63, and since then there's been tons of new releases. Anyone able to fill me in on what important games are now supported?  ;D

Oh, is blitz working? If it is how much horsepower does it take to run above 1 fps?

lots of things since .63.... most need a LOT of horsepower (and some need more then whats available to the public).

Download the latest... and look at the whatsold.txt

I haven't been completely impressed with any of the new games playwise go.  Some VERY impressing emulation feats... but not many that I can actually play.

I am still on version .66 and I have not seen any compelling reason to upgrade yet.

Only reason to upgrade I've seen, is the starfield addition in Sidearms.  I think that was available in .69 or something.

I recently upgraded from .63 to the latest and now I wish I hadn't.  I have an Athlon2300 or so in my cab and it's just too dang slow to run any of the new stuff.  If your cab is tricked out with the latest CPU then maybe it is worth your time.  I also have not gotten on the controls.cfg bandwagon so a lot of my games button configs were royally screwed up when I updated, and I just haven't made the time to reset them all.  I think I finally need to go the cfg route so this doesn't happen again.

Where can older versions of MAME be downloaded from? I would quite like to go backwards to an older version.

I got a complete set of roms for .63.  I just recently got a differential list from .79.  What's the properway of updating my roms from .63 to .79?  I tried copying the new zip files over my old ones and then a lot of stuff stopped working...I'm guessing I did something wrong.

Thanks

Oh yeah, big time!  A lot of times update ROMs are just the ROMs that need to be updated.  If you just overwrote a bunch of ROMs with an update set, you likely lost a bunch.

You should have used a ROM manager.  I recommend ClrMAME.  The update ROMs should be set up as an add path and ClrMAME will just put the new ROMs into the old sets.  Easy as falling off a log.

Heh, easy for you to say.  :)  I'm terrified of that program.  I've been reading up a lot on it though.  I'm gonna try again tonight.

Thanks for the confirmation though.

Then use romcenter.... does exactly the same thing and it's pretty much idiot proof. :)
