BYO Birthday Cake
« on: February 07, 2004, 10:23:08 pm »
Well it was my daughter's (Sydney) first birthday party today and we made all of the decorations, party gifts and cake in a ladybug theme.  I just wanted to show off the cake since it took so long (and took me away from my mini-Williams building  :P).  Luckily most of you guys are just as sick and crazy as I am so I'm in good company here...

We made 4 cakes.  Two large flowers, a mushroom and a small removable flower for Sydney.  I built all of the stems out of 3/4" plywood and styrofome.  The base is covered with a vinyl tablecloth.  You may notice that the large flower on the right is higher because I tried to make a hill but it apparently wasn't high enough to see easily  :-\.  The mushroom is two cakes frosted together then cut to shape.  The baby mushrooms and flower are just colored vanilla cookes setting on green Dots (the candy).  We frosted the entire stems, bottoms and cakes for the "everything is cake" effect.

The butterfly in the upper left is held up by a cloth hanger (cloth hangers are second only to duct tape  :D).  The ladybugs are painted styrofome.  The right lady bug flies around by a small hobby motor placed inside the flower stem.  The batteries are hidden inside the hill.

It all worked out exactly as planned!  Too bad Sydney won't remember but it sure was fun to make!

Note to 1hookedspacecadet:
I expect to be outdone next April!!!!

Alrighty then.....back to the minis.
Next I'll be on fries, and that's when the big money starts rolling in.

That is really awesome Nannu!  I am going to have to get to the drawing (baking) board for sure!  Oddly enough, I think our daughter will be named Sydney as well!  The other working title is Emma, but I am not really hot on that name.  Looks just awesome, great work.  Of course now you have set a precident so by the time she is 16 you will need to add a laser show, fireworks, marching bands, etc, etc,  :)

WOW!

Almost as good as the alegator cake my mom made me as a kid!   Memories of that cake still stand out in my mind 25 years latter, while I have no idea what else happened that year, what gifts I might have got who showed up.   (Pictures inform me that I turned 4, by counting candles)

Several years latter mom made a cake much like it, but it wasn't nearly as cool or as big.   She keeps insisting that they were exactly the same size, but I don't believe it.

Amazing what kids remember, and when you find out it helps put into perspective what is really important.   I think your cake is worth more than just about anything else you can do for her.  (though in part because we just take for granted clean clothes, food, and loving parents at that age)

It looks as though you have taken some Wilton cake decorating classes.  I can tell by the last cake, you did that for class didn't you?
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

Yep, my wife took a cake class a few years ago which is why our family asks us to make cakes for them.  We stopped making the sugar/crisco frosting though, after seeing how it is made I can't eat it, blech.  Cakes are fun to do as long as you make it ridiculous.  Who wants to make a plain old rectangular anything anyway?  Our friend asked us for one next month using Elmo....mmmm how to eat Elmo without seriously disturbing the 2 year olds...
