Is any arcade monitor ok?
« on: February 03, 2004, 02:12:04 pm »
I'm about to buy a cabinet with a monitor in it at a good price, but I can't look at it before I buy (I will be buying it from a service similar to ebay in my country). This is my first cabinet project.
So that's my concern, supposing that the monitor itself works fine, will it be ok any kind of monitor?
The person that is selling me will make me a good discount if I don't take the game board (wich I don't care about), is this board needed at all for the monitor or something?
My plan is to build this cabinet and use Linux/AdvanceMame in it.
Thank you.

If the monitor works fine then you should be good to go--advancemame will let you interface the pc to the monitor (with a little bit of setup) through a regular video card.  be warned though that some video cards work better than others with advmame so head to their site and check it out
http://advancemame.sourceforge.net/doc-carddos.html
(thats the dos card list but should give you an idea)

Just so you know, you don't need the gameboard to run the monitor if its a standard arcade monitor--they are generally worth some money on their own, which is why he likely wants to keep it.

You may want to consider Ultimarc's ArcadeVGA card for video if using a 15Khz arcade monitor.  This is easier, safer, and easy to configure.

Well, I saw ArcadeVGA page, but in the first place I couldn't find any references on the site saying that it will work on linux. Second, I live in South America, so, to much trouble and expensive to bring it here.
Third and most important, I like to do this kind of things in the complicated and cheap way ;D. And since I'm now almost an electronic engineer I expect I won't have much trouble.  ;)
Thank's anyway for your help and suggestions, I'm sure it'll be very usefull in these months to come.  ;)
