My first Lowboy

Well, I finally managed to get hold of a digital camera and so here are some pix of the first Mame arcade machine I made about a year ago.  This was built without much planning, but came out much better than I originally had imagined.



The cabinet was an old generic "lowboy" cabinet which were very common here in Australia, especially in Fish 'n' chip shops!  Unfortunately I didn't take too many shots of the cab before I started hacking away at the thing with a jigsaw, but you can see from this shot the original cabinet.  I decided to build a larger control panel coming out of the cabinet, cos there just wasn't enough elbow room for 2 players.



It has a keyboard draw, and uses a standard 19" PC monitor.  The monitor was an old one which is quite temperamental, with the left and right size adjustments sometimes moving in and out by itself - hence the hole I cut in the front to give me access to the screen adjustment dial.

The side artwork was printed on sticker paper and just slapped on the outside.  It didn't quite turn out how I thought, but looks ok.  Although when it got hot this summer, it did start to peel off a bit!

I like the Lowboy style, definitely helps you save a little bit wood costs.  I was thinking of something along the lines of a lowboy only without the marquee, want to have a cabinet an adult can play on standing up, minimum costs.

Hey that's nice!  I'm a fan of the monitors set that way, I dunno, must have started with my first game of pacman.  It makes the player look more like they're concentrating intently on something, instead of starting upwards at all the pretty lights and flashing

Of course, the player also resembles a guy burning ants with a magnifying glass now that I think about it...hmmm

I just slotted the PC monitor in the hole where the original arcade monitor mount was.  It turned out to fit in quite snug and the angle is pretty much perfect for me!  I'm about 6'2" tall so standing in front of the cabinet I get a great view of the entire screen

Mine is mounted a similar angle, and for the same reason. That's how the original monitor was set in the cab. I wasn't sure how I'd like it, but after playing it a bit I decided that I like it quite a bit that way.
