To be fair even high end 3d printers often print out parts that look like garbage without a lot of finish work.  I've got to imagine those fins would have been a nightmare to clean up.  
But yeah, if it's crowdfunded then that means Atari isn't willing to foot the bill, nor are these crappy retro shovelware companies like at@games.  In other words it's a horrible business decision, which means nobody is going to make games for it.  (Not that I thought they would even when I thought Atari was doing it.)
